One of the oldest known in the Americas. Its main centre, Caral-Supe, dates back nearly 5,000 years. That places it alongside early urban societies in Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt. Caral seems to have developed differently. No defensive walls. No clear signs of weapons. Instead, researchers found evidence of trade networks stretching from the Pacific coast into the Andes and even towards the Amazon. Cotton, crops, marine resources were exchanged across regions.
