As summer approaches, air conditioners start becoming an important appliance in most homes. During the cooler months, many AC units remain unused or are used only occasionally. Because of this, dust can accumulate inside the filters and coils, and small technical issues may go unnoticed. When the temperature begins to rise, the AC suddenly has to run for long hours every day. If the unit has not been serviced properly, it may cool less efficiently or even stop working during peak summer days. This is why servicing the air conditioner before the hot season is considered important. A lot of people call a technician for maintenance, but they don’t always know what needs to be checked. You can get a better idea of how your AC is doing and make sure it’s ready for summer by asking a few simple questions during servicing.

Why AC service before summer is important

Air conditioners have a lot of parts that work together, like filters, coils, fans, and refrigerant systems. Dust and dirt can build up in these parts over time, which can make them less effective at cooling. If the airflow is blocked or the parts inside are dirty, the AC may use more power and cool less. Before summer, getting the unit serviced cleans important parts and lets the technician check out the system. It can also help you find small problems early, before they turn into bigger ones when you use it a lot.

5 questions you must ask the mechanic while AC servicing

1) What components will be checked during the AC service?

One of the first things you should ask the technician is what they will look at during the service. A lot of people think that servicing an air conditioner only means cleaning the filters, but a full service usually includes a lot more. The technician might check:

  • Air filters
  • Unit for the inside and cooling coils
  • Condenser unit for outside
  • Fan operation and airflow
  • How the thermostat works

These checks make sure that the air conditioner works well to cool the room and that the air flow stays steady.

2) Is the refrigerant gas level normal?

The gas that cools the air conditioner is very important. It moves around inside the system and helps cool the air inside. The AC might not cool the room down properly or might take longer to do so if the gas level gets too low. You can ask the technician if the gas level has been checked and if it is in the right range while they are working on it.The technician may also look for leaks in the system if the gas is low.

3) Has the drainage pipe been cleaned?

An air conditioner not only cools the air, but it also takes moisture out of it. The water gathers as moisture and is let out through a pipe that drains.Over time, dust, algae, and other things may get stuck in this pipe. When the drain gets clogged, water may leak from the inside unit or pool around the system. If you ask the technician to check and clean the drainage pipe, you can be sure that water flows out properly and stops leaks.

4) Are the electrical connections and wiring safe?

Air conditioners need a lot of electrical parts to work, like switches, wires, capacitors, and control systems. If the wires are loose or broken, the unit might not work properly. When technicians fix something, they usually check the electrical connections to make sure they are safe and working properly. Checking this lowers the chance that the AC will break down or turn off suddenly in the summer when it is used a lot.

5) Do any parts need cleaning or replacement?

After a long time of use, some parts inside the air conditioner can break down or get clogged. While the technician is working on the device, they might find parts that need to be cleaned or replaced. These could be:

  • Air filters
  • Capacitors
  • Fan parts
  • Little parts inside

Changing out worn parts at the right time keeps the system cool and stops problems from happening later.

How asking these questions can help you maintain your AC

If you know the basics of AC repair, you can make sure the technician does a full check. You can keep up with your appliance by asking simple questions about its filters, gas levels, drainage, wiring, and parts condition. If you take care of and service your air conditioner regularly, it will work better in the summer. It also helps keep the system clean and ready to cool for long periods of time when the weather gets hot.
