Who is T Vishnudatta Jayaraman? Indian-American journalist commended by Virginia Senate for contributions to South Asian community

The Virginia State Senate has passed a resolution commending Indian‑American journalist T. Vishnudatta Jayaraman for his contributions to journalism and the South Asian community in the United States.The resolution was adopted on las week during a session of the Senate. It recognised Jayaraman’s work as founder and editor‑in‑chief of the South Asian Herald, a news outlet established in October 2024 to serve as an authentic voice for the Indian‑American and broader South Asian community.Introduced by State Senator Kannan Srinivasan, the Senate resolution noted that Jayaraman had “amplified diverse voices, fostered informed dialogue, and brought greater attention to the South Asian community in the Commonwealth.” He was present in the Senate Gallery when the commendation was read aloud.Lieutenant governor Ghazala Hashmi, who is also President of the Virginia State Senate, lauded Jayaraman’s dedication to independent media. She described South Asian Herald as an “important voice” and thanked him for his efforts to represent and inform local communities.This is not the first time Jayaraman has been recognised by the Virginia legislature. In March 2024, a Senate resolution was passed honouring his journalistic work and contributions to foreign policy discussions.Before founding South Asian Herald, Jayaraman worked with several leading newspapers. He also served as contributing editor for the United Nations Yearbook.Jayaraman holds a PhD in International Administration and the United Nations from the University of Madras, a Master’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from the same university, and a Master’s degree in Diplomacy and International Relations from Seton Hall University, New Jersey.He is a member of professional bodies such as the White House Correspondents Association, United Nations Correspondents Association, National Press Club, and the South Asian Journalists Association.
