Who was Gautham Rajanikanth? Indian-American student missing in Pittsburgh confirmed dead, family launches fundraiser

A tragic end has come to the search for 17-year-old Indian-origin student Gautham Rajanikanth, who had gone missing earlier this week in Pittsburgh. His grieving parents have now confirmed that he passed away days after he was reported missing. In an emotional message shared through a GoFundMe campaign, Gautham’s parents, Rajanikanth Jayaseelan and Gayathri Krishnamoorthy, urged the community to come together to honour their son’s memory.“In lieu of flowers or gifts, we are asking for donations to support causes that are close to Gautham’s heart and ours while making a meaningful difference for others.”They added that they hope to “turn grief into action” by supporting initiatives that help others in need.

Who was Gautham Rajanikanth?

Gautham Rajanikanth was an 11th-grade student at South Fayette High School and a well-loved member of his community. Described by his family as “kind and caring,” he shared a close bond with his younger brother and maintained a relatively private but meaningful social life among friends and neighbours.A talented musician, Gautham excelled in multiple instruments. He played the violin with the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestra and the Sahana Band, while also performing clarinet in his school’s wind ensemble, trumpet in the pep band, and piano over the years.Beyond academics and music, he was deeply committed to martial arts. Having trained in karate since the age of seven, he earned a second-degree black belt in Tang Soo Do and was working towards his third-degree certification. He also had a love for animals, nature, and simple joys, from building Legos to exploring the outdoors.

Fundraiser crosses initial goal

The family launched a fundraiser, organised by Nivedha Suresh, to support local causes. The initial target of USD 75,000 was reached within two days, prompting a temporary pause in donations. Contributions resumed soon after, with the total surpassing USD 83,000 from over a thousand donors.Funds raised will be distributed to:

  • Local fire departments that assisted in the search
  • Search and rescue missions in the region
  • Mental health awareness and support programmes in Western Pennsylvania

Mystery over disappearance and death

Gautham was reported missing earlier in the week, prompting a search by South Fayette Township Police. Authorities later called off the search without providing clear details, leading to widespread speculation and concern within the Indian-American community.Officials have not yet confirmed the circumstances or events leading up to his death.

Final farewell

A memorial service for Gautham was held on March 19 at Beinhauer Funeral Home in Pennsylvania, where friends and family gathered to celebrate his life.He is survived by his parents, his younger brother Ashwin, and an extended family of grandparents, relatives, and friends, all of whom remember him as a thoughtful, talented young individual whose life left a lasting impact.
