Quote of the day by Agatha Christie: “As life goes on it becomes tiring to keep up...”

Agatha Christie is one of the most prominent authors of detective fiction. She has been called the ‘Queen of Crime’ and developed the popular fictional detectives in the literary world, like Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Her works have not only been appreciated for their intricate plots and unexpected twists, but have also shown her keen understanding of human nature. In all her works of fiction, short stories, and plays, Christie has shown her expertise in understanding the intricacies of human behaviour and the secrets that ordinary people carry with themselves. In addition to her success as a writer, Christie’s life was full of experiences that shaped her outlook on the world. From her work during World War I to her travels throughout the Middle East, Christie met people of all kinds. In her autobiography, “Agatha Christie: An Autobiography,” readers can catch a glimpse into her own thoughts and observations about life. It is here, in this type of work, that some of her most poignant observations can be found, as she shows herself to be a thinker not only about crime, but about humanity as well. The quote, “As life goes on it becomes tiring to keep up the character you invented for yourself, and so you relapse into individuality and become more like yourself everyday,” is attribbuted to Agatha Cristie and comes from Agatha Christie: An Autobiography.

What the quote conveys

The underlying idea of this quote, however, is the tiredness of living inauthentically. In the early stages of life, people develop their own “character” either consciously or subconsciously. This “character” is the identity that people develop in relation to what others want them to be or what others are expecting of them. This “character” can also mean behaving in certain ways, pretending not to have certain weaknesses, and presenting oneself in the way that others want them to be. However, this is not easy to maintain all the time, and the tiredness of maintaining this inauthenticity is what Christie’s quote points to.The second part of the quote offers a promising and liberating thought, which is that as life goes on, people naturally begin to go back to who they are as individuals. This “relapse into individuality” is, in a sense, a form of growing as a person, as it shows that being authentic is not something we become but something we discover as we go along. As we go through life, we become less and less concerned with what the world thinks of us, and more concerned with who we are as individuals. We begin to let go of all the pretenses and become who we are, for better or for worse, as we go along. The insight provided by Agatha Christie goes far beyond her skill as a storyteller; it reaches the core of her understanding of human identity and personal evolution. The quote serves as a reminder that, although it might be tempting to create these kinds of identity constructs in the world, we cannot sustain them. In the quiet way that life has of reminding us of what is important, we are brought back to ourselves. In embracing our true self, we not only free ourselves of the burdens of pretending to be someone we are not, but we also discover the freedom and contentment that comes with being ourselves.
