'Pinky and the Brain' animator Barry Caldwell passes away at 68; Paul Dini pays an emotional tribute
Barry Caldwell, the visionary animator behind beloved classics like ‘Animaniacs’ and ‘Pinky and the Brain,’ has left us at the age of 68. His close collaborator Paul Dini reflected on Caldwell’s boundless creativity, warmth, and infectious humor.

TRIGGER WARNING: This article mentions death. Reader discretion is advised.Barry Caldwell, the animator and director known for his work on classic cartoon series ‘Animaniacs’ and ‘Pinky and the Brain,’ has passed away at the age of 68. The animator was widely known for his contributions to some of the most beloved animated shows that audiences still cherish.

Veteran animator Barry Caldwell passes away

Barry Caldwell’s passing was confirmed through tributes shared by his longtime friend and collaborator Paul Dini. The update came after fellow animator Dan Haskett informed him about Barry Caldwell’s death.

Paul Dini’s emotional tribute

Paul Dini shared a heartfelt message describing Barry’s professional brilliance. He wrote, “Barry Caldwell was one of the first animation artists I met when I started my career fresh out of school way back around 1980. He was also one of the finest artists I ever met, and easily one of the best people. The man’s talent as a cartoonist, designer and director was revered throughout the industry and I’ll get to that. First, I’d rather talk about Barry himself, funny, kind, a genial giant of a guy that you liked from the moment you met him. He knew more about cartoons than you or I ever will (trust me on this) yet he was incredibly generous with his time and his talent. And my God, could he make you laugh! When it comes to humor, it takes a special kind of genuis to be both dry and warm. Barry was both.”He added, “No artist ever mocked the insanity of the Hollywood cartoon stystem with such devastating incisiveness, and yet loved its creative output so much. At least, I believe he did. You don’t last too long in the cartoon business unless you have some true affection for the characters and the people you work with to bring them to life. That spirit was on display for as long as I knew him, and in all the places we worked together, Filmation, Ruby-Spears, Warner Bros, Disney, so many others.“

A career spanning four decades

Barry Caldwell began his career around 1980 after training at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He quickly became a sought-after talent in animation. His early work included contributions to shows like ‘Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids,’ ‘The New Adventures of Zorro,’ ‘The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show,’ ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe,’ and ‘The Smurfs.’ Barry Caldwell’s most notable contributions came through ‘Animaniacs,’ where he worked as both animator and director on several episodes. These included “Bumbie’s Mom,” “West Side Pigeons,” and “Cat on a Hot Steel Beam.” Caldwell also contributed as a writer, and his storyboard work on ‘Pinky and the Brain’ stood out. His work on “A Pinky and the Brain Christmas” remains widely appreciated.

Contributions across film and television

Beyond television, Barry Caldwell worked on several feature projects. His credits include The Tigger Movie, Osmosis Jones, and Curious George. He also contributed to the famous ‘Kim Possible’ and ‘Mulan II’. His work extended to projects like Hop and DreamWorks’ Dragons series.
