Summer is almost here. And there’s nothing more refreshing than a chilled glass of lemonade to fight the summer heat. But ordering lemons and lemonade all the time is a tedious and costly process. Growing lemons in your balcony garden this summer is not just a rewarding experience but a cool way to enjoy homemade lemonades straight from your own plant! With the right care, even a small urban balcony can turn into a thriving citrus corner.Choosing the right plantIf you are planning to grow lemons on your balcony, always choose a dwarf or grafted lemon variety. It is perfect for containers. You can choose Meyer or Ponderosa lemons. These varieties are suggested because they are compact and easy to maintain. Choose grafted plants for better and faster results.Picking the perfect potChoose a pot that is at least 12-16 inches wide. Lemons plants need the right containers to grow. Get well-draining and light acidic soil. Garden soil, compost, and sand are best for aeration. This combination ensures nutrients reach the roots. Keep your pot in the sunniest part of your balcony. Or make sure the plant receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight everyday. Watering the right wayConsistency is important. Keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering. It’s a very common mistake. During hot Indian summers, water daily. But it is recommended to check the topsoil first.Feeding and maintenanceNow this is a very important tip. Lemon plants are heavy feeders so keep feeding them citrus-specific fertilizer every 4–6 weeks. It helps boost flowering and fruiting. Lemon trees are self-pollinating. But in a balcony setting it could be difficult. Gently shake the plant or use a soft brush to help pollination. It can help improve the fruit quality.
