Mark Hamill reveals when his son told him ‘Star Wars isn’t' for him: Here’s what happened

Imagine being one of the iconic heroes in a franchise that’s as celebrated as ‘Star Wars’, and your own child not being excited about it! Mark Hamill’s gotten that taste from his own son.Hamill has spent decades at the heart of ‘Star Wars’. He’s Luke Skywalker, after all, the face of a saga that’s shaped pop culture for generations. You’d think the magic of Star Wars would be a family tradition in his house. But life’s rarely that tidy. Turns out, his son isn’t that “interested” in his father’s legendary work on screen.

Mark Hamill’s revelation: What did he say?

Per USA Today, in a recent interview, Mark Hamill opened up about sharing his world of ‘Star Wars’ with his own kids. Hamill revealed that his oldest son, Nathan, grew up right in the thick of it. Hamill brought him on set during “Return of the Jedi,” let him sit in Yoda’s hut, and even plopped him on the Emperor’s throne. Per Hamill, “He was totally into it.” Hamill added, “He could sit in Yoda’s house because he was little. He was perfectly proportioned. He sat on the Emperor’s throne. He was in the creature shop, and they were letting him play with things. When I did ‘The Muppet Show,’ the same thing. I thought, ‘What a wonderful experience for him.’ … I was almost envious of him being able to have all these experiences.”However, his younger son, Griffin, born in 1983, saw things differently. In fact, Hamill laughed about it: “My second son, Griffin, is more analytical and serious, and he says: ‘You know, Star Wars movies just aren’t for me. They’re too commercial for my liking,'” Hamill shared. It wasn’t harsh — just an honest confession from someone from a different generation. However, Hamill revealed that his daughter, unlike his younger son, likes the films, saying, “My daughter likes them. Kids are all different!”For Hamill, the moment stung a little, sure. But it’s also a reminder: as much as ‘Star Wars’ feels like a permanent fixture, tastes change, especially over generations. Generations shift. What blew audiences away in 1977 doesn’t always land the same way with kids growing up today, surrounded by endless options and flashier effects. Even in the home of Luke Skywalker, you don’t get a guaranteed ticket to fandom.

More on Mark Hamill and ‘Star Wars’

For the unversed, Hamill’s connection to ‘Star Wars’ runs deep. Hamill shot to fame as the idealistic farm kid who becomes a Jedi knight. That role changed his life, but Hamill’s career kept moving. He built a reputation on Broadway, became a legend in voice acting (his Joker is iconic), and popped up in everything from “The Big Red One” to “The Fall of the House of Usher.” But Luke Skywalker is always at the core.In all truth, ‘Star Wars’ has always been about change. George Lucas kicked off something massive, and it’s kept growing: movies, TV, comics, games. It’s a cultural juggernaut. But that means the audience keeps shifting, too. What felt revolutionary decades ago is just one story among thousands for new viewers. These days, Hamill’s still playing in the ‘Star Wars’ sandbox. He voiced animated Luke in ‘Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy’, and now he’s teaming up with Lego to launch a new line of sets that use interactive SMART Play technology. The bricks light up, make noise, and react as you build, which is a far cry from the simple toys of the ‘80s and a testament to the evolution over the years.
