The baking soda mattress trick: What works, what people get wrong, and how to do it right
Baking soda effectively neutralizes mattress odors by absorbing moisture and trapping smell-causing particles. However, it’s not a complete cleaning solution and excessive use can be counterproductive

Foul smells, dust particles, and even stains on the mattress are all very common issues that most of us are aware of but take care of after a while. Adding baking soda to the mattress and then cleaning it up afterwards is one of the most common techniques used by many people. While it sounds quite simple, it does work to a great extent. At its core, baking soda works because of its ability to absorb moisture and neutralise odours. Guidance from the Sleep Foundation on mattress care explains that porous materials like baking soda can trap and reduce smell-causing particles when given enough time to sit on a surface. This is why a light, even layer across the mattress, left undisturbed for at least an hour, tends to give the best results.Scientifically speaking, this concept is quite straightforward. Research into VOC adsorption mechanisms shows how solid materials with a large surface area can capture odour-producing volatile organic compounds from the air through adsorption processes. For example, the study Biochar for volatile organic compound (VOC) removal: Sorption performance and governing mechanisms, published in Bioresource Technology, demonstrates that porous solid adsorbents like biochar can bond with VOC molecules through physical adsorption and partitioning, reducing their presence in the surrounding environment. By the same principle, substances like baking soda help trap and neutralise odours in fabrics by adsorbing the VOCs responsible for themOnce the time period comes to an end, the vacuuming procedure becomes paramount in the process. It’s not enough just to remove the visible layer of dust; allergens must be pulled from deeper down because microscopic particles can cling beneath the surface. Scientific research confirms this. A study published in the Journal of Asthma, found that daily vacuum cleaning over several weeks led to significant reductions in house dust mite allergens and other bio‑contaminants in mattresses, showing that thorough and repeated vacuuming helps lower allergen levels more effectively than occasional surface cleaning. The limitations of this approach and the research findingsDespite its effectiveness in dealing with light smells, baking soda cannot be considered a total cleaning agent. One of the common mistakes made during the cleaning process is the usage of excessive amounts of baking soda. At first glance, one may think that more powder would lead to more efficient results; however, this often turns out to be counterproductive. There is also a hygiene angle to consider. Research such as Exposure to house dust mite allergens and the clinical activity of asthma published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, highlights how bedding materials can collect high levels of allergens deep within their structure over time. This study shows that greater exposure to mite allergens in beds correlates with more active asthma symptoms in sensitive individuals, reinforcing why surface-level treatments such as baking soda may freshen only the top layer and do not fully address what lies beneath.

For deeper cleaning and allergen reduction, thorough vacuuming is crucial. Prevention through mattress covers and ventilation offers a more comprehensive approach to maintaining a fresh and healthy sleep environment.

It’s easy to forget about moisture. According to the World Health Oranganization’s document Indoor dampness and mould as indicators of respiratory health risks, within the guidelines for indoor air quality, moisture contributes to the growth of mould and negatively affects indoor hygiene. Failure to properly dry a mattress after cleaning will inevitably result in it absorbing new smells and possibly becoming dangerous to your health.Wise approaches to mattress maintenance and cleaningIt’s more effective to incorporate baking soda into a larger cleaning regimen instead of using it as a last resort. In the case of stains, a solution of dish soap diluted with water tends to be more efficient. It deals with the stains themselves and doesn’t leave residues of the powder that have to be wiped off afterwards. The most crucial thing here is to limit moisture usage and make sure it dries up entirely. In case the stains are really tough to remove, cleaning professionals recommend hydrogen peroxide, as it helps break down organic stains such as perspiration and liquid spills while also offering disinfecting properties. The principle of prevention lies at the heart of the matter. The mattress cover provides protection against dust, sweat, and dirt, whereas vacuuming can deal with the dust problem without the use of baking soda. Sufficient ventilation will prevent humidity. In the end, the baking soda method is useful, but it works best when used correctly and in moderation. A light application, enough waiting time, and proper vacuuming make all the difference. When combined with simple habits like airing out your bed and dealing with stains early, it becomes part of a routine that keeps your mattress fresh without much effort.Gentle consistency is more effective than a fast solution. Instead of looking for a fast way out, adopting some consistent habits will keep your bed clean and comfortable throughout the night.
