“Water of Tears” is one of the strangest names a lake can have, but there is an interesting story behind it. Far from the madding crowd in the heart of the hills in Meghalaya, just a short drive from Shillong, lies a gorgeous expanse of water which carries an emotional name and it is known as Umiam Lake, aka the “Water of Tears.” The lake attracts travellers from across the globe for its scenic beauty each year. But did you know why the lake is also associated with tears?Let’s find out:The legend The name “Umiam” comes from the Khasi language. “Um” in Khasi means water and “iam” means tears. And that’s why “water of tears.” According to Khasi legend, the lake was created out of sorrow. It says that two sisters descended from the heavens to earth but on their way, one sister lost her way. The other sister started crying and her tears formed the lake here. The story gives the lake a mystical aura. It is also known as “Barapani” locally which means “big water”.Beyond folkloreUmiam Lake is a manmade waterbody which was created in the early 1960s. It was created as a part of a hydroelectric project but today, the lake is counted among the largest artificial reservoirs in Northeast India. But it’s the stunning setting that makes Umiam Lake a must visit in Shillong as the lake is enveloped by hills and lush greenery. The lake is beautiful in every season.
