Bohag Bihu is one of the most prominent festivals celebrated in Assam. The day marks the beginning of a new year, which is celebrated with immense enthusiasm and excitement. Rongali Bihu is another name for Bohag Bihu. In addition to being the first day of the Hindu solar calendar, this auspicious day marks the start of the harvesting season. This day is regarded as the year’s fresh start. Bohag Bihu is being celebrated today i.e., today, April 14, 2026.

Bohag Bihu 2026: Significance

Bohag Bihu is very important to the Assamese. The spring season officially begins from this day. People enjoy singing and dancing during this celebration, which also offers delight. The Bihu dance is well-known in Assam and is performed by both men and women. People dress nicely in traditional attire. The celebration lasts for seven days.

Bohag Bihu 2026: Celebration

After dressing up in exquisite, colorful attire—ladies in traditional sarees, men in dhotis and gamosas—young men and women perform the Bihu dance. The finest approach to present the culture is in this way.Bihu fairs are held, and people go and participate in them. Everyone celebrates this day with friends, family, and other loved ones. and savor a variety of treats.

Bohag Bihu 2026: Rituals

In the Assam region, Bohag Bihu is celebrated with great splendor. The primary event of the celebration is Jalpaan, which is a light breakfast consisting of rice, curd, and jaggery. They wake up early, take a holy bath with turmeric paste, wash their cows, and leave them to wander around and ask their elders for blessings.Raati Bihu: Sitting beneath an old tree or in a public space lit by burning torches is how people commemorate this day.Chot Bihu: On this day, both men and women dress elegantly, sing traditional music, and perform dances.Goru Bihu: This stage is linked to Assam’s agricultural heritage and the importance of cattle.Manuh Bihu: The phase commemorates the start of the Hindu calendar’s Vaishakh month. Young folks receive blessings from their elders on this day. After that, people celebrate the New Year by going to the homes of friends and family.Kutum Bihu: On the second day of the celebration, folks go to see their loved ones and extend invitations for lunch and dinner.Mela Bihu: All cultural and traditional activities take place on this day.Chera Bihu: Bohagi Bidai is the fourth and last day of Rongali Bihu. On this final day of the celebration, people prayed for a happy and prosperous new year and asked God for blessings.
