The laundry shortcut: How one dry towel can slash your drying time
A simple trick can cut dryer time and electricity bills. Adding a dry towel to wet clothes helps absorb moisture faster. This allows clothes to dry more quickly.

We have all experienced this: After washing, we have wet jeans or sweatshirts in the basket, which requires a second round through the dryer, along with a sneaky increase in your electrical bill for that evening. But instead of seeing the dryer just as another simple appliance that heats and spins, it actually involves an art of drying and air flow. And here’s a clever method that somehow made its way out of the laundromat and into our homes, and it takes just one towel! When you put a dry material into the drum with your wet laundry, you have temporarily created an easy way out for the moisture. Instead of just being turned into water vapour that remains in the air in the drum, water can now find another place to go. By employing this method, one can use a simple but effective way for drying laundry, which will not keep you waiting until the end of the process. Why “Micro-desiccants” can work with relative humidityWhat makes this process work is the need to take a look at what happens in the drum. If the garments are drenched, then it does not take long before the humidity level gets extremely high in there. After reaching some point, it becomes difficult for any more water vapour to be evaporated from the materials. This creates a more favourable environment for evaporation, mirroring the logic used in industrial setups. In the research paper Effect of desiccant system on thin layer drying kinetics of corn, scientists explored how removing moisture from the surrounding air can significantly accelerate the drying of organic materials. When you toss in that dry towel, you are creating a DIY desiccant system that drinks up the initial surface moisture, allowing the dryer’s heat to focus on the deep-seated dampness in the rest of your garments.

Towel Absorbing Laundry Moisture

The method saves energy and protects garments from heat damage. Remove the towel after 15-20 minutes for best results. This technique offers efficiency and clothing preservation.

This principle has even greater weight as we consider how heat operates within a load. A large dry cotton bath sheet provides a massive surface area, contributing greatly to breaking apart wet clothes and avoiding the accumulation of moisture in creases. As discussed in the paper The evaporation of moisture from wet surfaces, the speed at which moisture leaves a surface largely depends on the ability of the air surrounding it to take it away. The bath sheet immediately absorbs all surface moisture, allowing the drying unit to get off to a flying start.Energy efficiency and clothing protectionThe advantage of shorter cycles does not end here. The technique in question represents an effective means of saving energy in a household. Dryers consume the highest amount of energy compared to other appliances in a standard family setting, and reducing cycle duration by even fifteen minutes makes a considerable difference.Research in thermodynamics, from the journal foods, highlights that managing the “on-time” of heat sources can lead to much better energy utilisation. By using a dry towel to absorb moisture early in the cycle, you allow the machine to reach its optimal drying state much faster. This prevents the heating element from running longer than necessary, which is better for both your wallet and the environment. There is also the added benefit of fabric preservation. High heat is the primary enemy of clothing longevity; it breaks down fibres, causes elastic to snap, and leads to colour fading. By using the towel trick to shorten the total exposure to intense heat, you are extending the life of your wardrobe. In order for the procedure to be successful, a pure white cotton towel is recommended to avoid the transfer of colours or lint. However, the trick here lies in the timing. After about 15-20 minutes, the towel will have absorbed enough water. It can now be removed to allow the machine to continue drying the clothes without having to work hard on the towel.
