Caramelised onions have been used extensively in cooking due to their unique ability to enhance the taste of different foods through sweetness and umami. This food is created using the slow-cooking method until all the natural sugar in the onions caramelises to form the tasty onions. Although this food is time-consuming to prepare, it is possible to make it in bulk and store it for future use. As such, caramelised onions are highly versatile and flexible to use in many different ways. It can be used in conventional recipes as well as creative culinary experiments.

Caramelised onions may be added to various food preparations to enhance the taste of the food. The sweetness and thickness of caramelised onions allow them to be used in both regular and experimental preparations.

Adding depth to sloppy joes

  • Heat oil in a pan and sauté minced garlic.
  • Add ground meat and cook until browned.
  • Mix in tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, and seasoning.
  • Stir in caramelised onions and simmer for 10–15 minutes.
  • Serve hot on toasted buns, adding extra onions on top if desired.

Baking them into savoury breads

  • Prepare bread dough (flour, yeast, salt, water).
  • Fold caramelised onions into the dough during kneading.
  • Optionally add cheese or herbs for extra flavour.
  • Let the dough rise until doubled in size.
  • Shape, bake in a preheated oven, and cool before slicing.

Turning them into a savoury ice cream

  • Blend caramelised onions with milk, cream, sugar, and a pinch of salt.
  • Heat the mixture gently and allow it to cool.
  • Churn in an ice cream maker until thick.
  • Freeze until firm before serving.

Blending into hummus for extra flavour

  • In a blender, combine chickpeas, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil.
  • Add caramelised onions and blend until smooth.
  • Adjust salt and consistency with water if needed.
  • Serve with a drizzle of olive oil or extra onions on top.

Using them in savoury cookies

  • Prepare the dough with flour, butter, eggs, and grated cheese.
  • Fold in caramelised onions and herbs.
  • Shape into small rounds and place on a baking tray.
  • Bake until golden and firm.
  • Cool slightly before serving.

Upgrading nachos with sweet-savoury notes

  • Spread tortilla chips on a baking tray.
  • Add cooked meat or beans, cheese, and caramelised onions.
  • Bake until the cheese melts.
  • Top with sauces, jalapeños, or sour cream before serving.

Making a concentrated onion seasoning

  • Spread caramelised onions thinly on a tray.
  • Dehydrate in an oven or dehydrator until completely dry.
  • Grind into a fine powder.
  • Store in an airtight container and use as seasoning.

Incorporating them into mujaddara

  • Cook lentils until tender and set aside.
  • Prepare rice separately.
  • Mix rice and lentils with spices like cumin and allspice.
  • Top generously with caramelised onions.
  • Serve warm as a complete dish.
