The queen of sarees: Nita Ambani owns the global stage at TIME100 Gala, no gown needed
Nita Ambani captivated the TIME100 Gala by opting for a classic handwoven Banarasi saree and a bold, handcrafted blouse, eschewing typical red carpet trends. Her choice, complemented by historically significant jewelry and understated makeup, powerfully represented Indian culture and identity on a global stage, aligning with Reliance’s initiative to spotlight rising Indian talent.

In a room full of glitter, big gowns, and high-fashion drama, one woman went in a completely different direction and somehow ended up owning the whole night. At the TIME100 Gala in New York, chairperson of the Reliance Foundation, Nita Ambani skipped the usual red carpet playbook. No dramatic couture, no chasing trends. Just a saree. And honestly, that is what made everyone look twice. Because when she shows up, it is not just about looking good. There is always something more behind it.

A saree on a global stage? Of course

Let’s face it. Most international red carpets follow the same vibe. Big gowns, sharp tailoring, luxury brands everywhere. Safe, predictable, polished.

And then there is Nita Ambani, doing her own thing. This time, she wore a handwoven Banarasi saree made by Indian artisans. No overthinking, no trying to update it for a global crowd. Just classic, done right. And that is the thing. It works because she believes in it. Seeing a saree stand tall in a sea of Western fashion hits differently. It is not just an outfit anymore. It is culture, identity, confidence all wrapped into six yards.

That blouse? Not playing it safe

Now let’s talk about the blouse, because it definitely had its moment. Instead of going subtle, she paired the saree with a bold black blouse covered in colourful threadwork, again handcrafted – this time by none other than Manish Malhotra. The boat neckline gave it a slightly modern feel, while the clean, tailored fit kept it sharp. It did not clash with the saree. It lifted it. Nothing loud, nothing overdone. Just smart styling that actually makes sense.

Jewellery that felt like history, not just luxury

If the saree spoke of tradition, her jewellery told a story that went even deeper – one rooted in history, rarity, and serious craftsmanship. At the centre of it all was a truly extraordinary piece: a 101-carat pinkish-brown rose-cut diamond, shaped like a pear and carrying the legacy of an old Nizami lineage. This wasn’t your typical high-shine, modern-cut stone. It had a softer, almost earthy glow -something that felt aged in the most beautiful way. What made it even more special was its size and cut. Finding a rose-cut diamond of that scale is incredibly rare, and instead of blinding sparkle, it had this quiet depth to it. The kind you notice slowly. The kind that feels almost personal. Set across six strands of Basra pearls, the piece had a regal, old-world charm – like something that belongs in history, not just a jewellery box. She paired it with a delicate pink pear-shaped diamond ring, simple but striking. It didn’t compete for attention – it balanced the look. Just enough shine to complement everything else without overpowering it.The whole combination felt thoughtful, not excessive. Less about showing off, more about wearing something meaningful – and doing it with ease.

Soft glam, no drama

Her makeup followed the same easy, no-fuss vibe. Defined brows, a small black bindi, soft smoky eyes, and a glossy pinkish lip. Fresh skin, nothing heavy. The kind of look that does not scream for attention but still feels put together. Her hair was styled in soft waves with a side part, relaxed and natural. It did not look like she was trying too hard, and that is exactly why it worked.

More than just fashion

This was not just about what she wore. It was also about why she was there. Earlier, at the event, she joined Jessica Sibley to introduce TIME100 NEXT India, a big step in taking the platform global. And that matters. Because this moment was not just about style anymore. It was about showing up, representing, and putting India on the map in a way that feels real, not forced. She even spoke about how proud she was to represent India among global leaders. And honestly, you could see that pride before she even said a word.

Why it works every time

There is a reason people call her the queen of sarees. It is not just that she wears them. It is how she wears them. No trying to fix tradition. No watering it down to fit in. She shows up exactly as she is, and somehow that is what makes her stand out the most. While everyone else is chasing what is trending, she sticks to what lasts.

The bigger picture

The night also marked a collaboration between TIME and Reliance Industries to spotlight rising Indian talent through TIME100 NEXT India. The idea is to highlight 100 people across fields like arts, science, business, and sports who are shaping what comes next. The first event will take place at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai, a space built to showcase India’s creativity on a global level. And somehow, her look that night felt perfectly in sync with that vision. Some people follow fashion. Others do not need to. Nita Ambani walked into the TIME100 Gala in a saree and made it feel like the most powerful choice in the room. No drama. No gimmicks. Just showing up, being herself, and letting that do all the talking.
