‘Jab tum chhote the… mujhe bharosa tha tum kuch bada karoge’: Grandfather’s Words at Google Campus Leave Bengaluru Techie Emotional

When Bengaluru-based software engineer Manish Singh walked his grandfather through the Google campus, there was very little he tried to explain. He didn’t need to.His grandfather paused for a moment, taking in the space around him – the buildings, the people, the life his grandson had built. He looked slowly, as if matching it with something he had imagined long ago. Some things don’t need words.

A beginning shaped by effort

“I come from a very humble background, where every small step forward took a lot of effort and sacrifice from my family.”Manish’s journey began in a small government school, where resources were limited, and progress depended on persistence. There was no defined path ahead – only the need to keep moving.

At home, his grandparents – Rama Shankar Singh and Shyambihari Singh – stayed firm in one belief: education would open doors, even if none were visible yet.

The move that changed everything

At a crucial point, that belief turned into a decision. With his father working abroad, his mother, Neetu Singh, moved to Patna on her own so her son could study in a better environment.“It wasn’t easy for her, but she chose my future over her comfort.”The shift came with its own challenges – new surroundings, new expectations – and an unspoken awareness of what had been given up to make it possible.

Manish later studied at a tier-3 college, where ambition often had to stretch beyond available opportunities.“Getting into companies like Google or Amazon from such a background felt almost impossible at times.”There were no shortcuts. The days were repetitive – learning, improving, starting again.Over time, that effort began to show.

When achievement turned into something else

Getting into Google marked a milestone. But its meaning settled later.“Today, when I look back, what matters most is not just the achievement but the happiness it has brought to my family.”

That feeling became real on the day he brought his grandfather to the campus.“Mujhe tab se bharosa tha…”He remembers the words clearly.“Jab tum chhote the aur hum tumhe padhane ke liye apne paas laaye the, tab se mujhe bharosa tha ki tum kuch bada karoge. Aaj jab ye din dekh raha hoon, aankhon mein aansu aa jaate hain… bahut garv hota hai tum par.”There was a pause after that.“It made me realize that this journey was never mine alone,” Manish says. “It was built on their belief, their sacrifices, and everything they quietly did for me.”A moment that returned without being called backLater, the two rode bicycles across the campus. The moment passed quickly.Years earlier, it had begun differently – with his grandfather teaching him how to balance, how to move forward without fear.Nothing about that memory was spoken out loud. Some journeys are not measured by where they begin or end but by who gets to witness them along the way.
