Top divorce lawyer says he hopes every marriage ‘ends in death’ and the internet is stunned by the reason
Divorce lawyer James Sexton advocates for marriages to endure until death, emphasizing that lasting unions require more than just love. He highlights the importance of growing together, remaining authentic, and choosing connection amidst life’s inevitable changes. Sexton suggests a weekly ‘walk and talk’ ritual to foster emotional connection and prevent resentment, a habit many find relatable.

From the outside, some marriages can look completely perfect – happy vacation pictures, anniversary posts, cute couple reels, and years spent together. But relationships are rarely as simple as they appear online. Behind closed doors, even strong couples can struggle with emotional distance, communication problems, changing priorities, or simply growing into different versions of themselves over time. And according to James Sexton, that’s exactly why lasting marriages require much more than just love. The New York-based divorce and family lawyer recently shared a thought online that immediately caught people’s attention because of how unusual it sounded at first.“I hope people’s marriages end in death,” he said in an Instagram video posted on May 12.Now obviously, the statement shocked people initially. But James quickly explained what he actually meant. For him, it wasn’t about sadness or tragedy. It was about hoping couples stay together all the way till the very end of life – still connected, still grateful for each other, and still feeling like they chose the right person. And honestly, when he explained it further, the idea felt strangely emotional.

What he really meant by it

James said the biggest blessing in a marriage is reaching old age beside someone who still feels like your favourite person.Someone who helped you grow instead of shrinking you emotionally.Someone who saw every version of you over the years and still stayed. He explained that the best relationships are the ones where both people allow each other to become their most authentic selves instead of trying to control or change one another constantly. And that part probably hit a nerve with many people online because relationships naturally change over time. The person you marry at 28 may not be the exact same person at 45. Careers change. Priorities shift. Stress increases. Children happen. Life gets messy. The real challenge is whether couples keep choosing connection while all those changes happen quietly in the background.

The small habit he says can help marriages

Interestingly, James also shared one simple relationship habit that he believes helps couples stay emotionally connected. In an older podcast interview from December, he spoke about something called the “walk and talk.”Sounds simple, but the idea is actually pretty thoughtful. He said some couples make it a weekly ritual to go on a walk together and talk honestly about the relationship without distractions, phones, or defensiveness. During those walks, they discuss three things their partner did that made them feel loved during the week and one or two things that made them feel ignored, unseen, or hurt. The goal isn’t to start arguments. It’s to create a regular space where both people feel heard before resentment quietly builds up over months or years.James explained that relationships often break down not because of one giant moment, but because couples slowly stop making time for emotional connection. And honestly, that’s probably the part many people related to most.

Why people connected with his message

What made James Sexton’s comments resonate online was how realistic they felt.He didn’t talk about “perfect marriages” or fairy-tale relationships. Instead, he spoke about effort, growth, communication, and staying emotionally present through different phases of life.Because in reality, long-lasting relationships are rarely perfect all the time. They survive because people keep showing up for each other anyway.
