One of the most important Hindu festivals is Ganga Dussehra. Goddess Ganga’s birth anniversary is observed on this specific day, when she descended from heaven to earth. Ganga Dussehra is celebrated with great devotion by Hindu followers. During the month of Jyeshtha, the day is observed on dashami tithi of Shukla Paksha. This day is very significant both religiously and spiritually. People engage in a variety of spiritual and religious practices on this sacred day. She is also referred to as the earthly living goddess.

Ganga Dussehra 2026: Significance

Hindus place a high religious value on Ganga Dussehra. Goddess Ganga’s birth anniversary is marked on this day. Ganga Dussehra is observed because it is thought that Goddess Ganga came to earth on this auspicious day. In addition to worshiping the Ganga, devotees bathe in the river. Ganga water is believed to be able to eradicate negativity and purify the body, mind, and soul. On this day, devotees can atone for past offenses by taking a bath in the holy Ganga. Goddess Ganga is considered the caring, living goddess. From giving food to bathing in the Ganga River, devotees participate in a variety of spiritual practices and puja rites. Giving to charities and donations is considered meritorious. It is believed that taking a holy dip in the Ganga river will bring extraordinary blessings.

Ganga Dussehra 2026: Rituals

1. Before Suryodaya, or sunrise, people rise early and take a sacred dip in the Ganga River.2. Offer prayers and water or Arghya to the rising sun.3. While taking a sacred dip in the Ganga river, chanting “Om Namah Shivaye” will be meritorious.4. A minimum of 10 dips are required; if not, a minimum of 3 dips should be taken.5. Light a diya and present Goddess Ganga with flowers and sweets.6. Some even present sarees or dupattas to Goddess Ganga.7. On this specific day, people donate food, clothes and other useful items among the needy ones.8. Donating clothes and food is regarded as extremely fulfilling.9. In the evening, devotees take part in Ganga aarti.
