Tamil Nadu government approves 5 shows per day for new films; New theatre rule in the state EXPLAINED

On May 16, a meeting was held between representatives from the Tamil movie industry and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, regarding several demands, including allowing all movies to be screened with five screenings per day in theatres across the state. The discussion covered theatre reforms, subsidies for low-budget films and entertainment taxes. Following this discussion, the government has now taken a major decision benefiting the film industry.

Special show rules explained

As per the existing Tamil Nadu Theatre Regulation Rules of 1957, theatres currently operate four shows per day under C-form licence conditions. A fifth additional show is permitted with prior permission from the district authorities on festivals and public holidays. Now, after reviewing the industry request, the state government has officially revised the rules. New Tamil films will be allowed five shows per day for the first seven days after release. Additionally, five shows per day will be permitted on weekends, public holidays, and local festival days, making screening more flexible for exhibitors.

No separate approval needed for special shows in the first week

The revised order further simplifies the process for theatre owners. The Tamil Nadu government announced that for the first seven days of a new film release, and during weekends or holidays, no separate permission from licensing authorities will be required to conduct five shows. It is hoped that this will reduce the paperwork involved and assist theatre operators in managing increased demand during busy days.
