Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has earned a place in India’s 30-member men’s cricket probables list for the 2026 Asian Games, while two of the country’s biggest stars, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill, are notable absentees. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has submitted the longlist to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) ahead of the Asian Games, scheduled to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4.The omission of Gill and Suryakumar is largely linked to India’s packed international calendar. The Asian Games cricket competition will overlap with India’s home white-ball series against the West Indies, forcing selectors to prepare separate squads for the two assignments.Scheduling Clash Forces Two-Team StrategyIndia’s series against West Indies consists of three ODIs and five T20 Internationals, running from September 27 to October 17. With Gill expected to lead India’s ODI side during that series, selectors have opted against including him in the Asian Games pool. The cricket competition at the Asian Games is scheduled between September 24 and October 3, creating a significant overlap and necessitating a larger player pool from which two squads can be selected. As a result, the BCCI has prepared a 30-member list featuring players who can be split across both tournaments depending on the final squad requirements. No Place for Suryakumar YadavPerhaps the biggest surprise is the absence of current T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav. The decision suggests that selectors may already be looking ahead to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next T20 World Cup cycle. With a younger core emerging, Suryakumar’s omission indicates that he may no longer be central to India’s long-term T20 plans.Vaibhav Sooryavanshi RewardedOne of the major talking points is the inclusion of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The teenage batting sensation has enjoyed a remarkable rise over the past year from IPL and U19 World Cup and is now firmly on the national selectors’ radar.Who Could Lead India? With Gill & Surya unavailable, the captaincy race for the Asian Games squad appears wide open. Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma are understood to be the leading contenders to lead the side in Japan. Despite the scheduling challenges, several senior players have been included in the pool. Jasprit Bumrah’s name features in the list, although he could ultimately be prioritised for the ODI series against West Indies as India continue preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Other notable names include Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy.Full 30-Member Probables ListYashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Prasidh Krishna, Varun Chakravarthy, Anukul Roy, Ayush Badoni, Harsh Dubey, Dhruv Jurel, Khaleel Ahmed, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravi Bishnoi, Shahbaz Ahmed, Shivam Dube, Vipraj Nigam, Harshit Rana, Yash Thakur and Washington Sundar.
