Liverpool have parted ways with manager Arne Slot following a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, bringing an end to the Dutchman’s two-year spell at Anfield just one season after he guided the club to Premier League glory.The decision was confirmed by Liverpool’s ownership group, Fenway Sports Group, which described the move as a difficult one but insisted it was necessary to help the club progress after a frustrating title defence that ended with a fifth-place finish.Slot arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2024 as the successor to Jürgen Klopp and enjoyed immediate success. In his first season, he led the Reds to their 20th English league title, drawing level with the all-time record and easing concerns about life after Klopp.However, expectations were much higher heading into the following campaign. Liverpool backed Slot heavily in the transfer market, spending a reported $570 million to reinforce the squad. High-profile arrivals including Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Alexander Isak failed to consistently deliver, while injuries further complicated matters during the season.The club also had to cope with the tragic death of Portugal international Diogo Jota last summer, an event that cast a shadow over the campaign.In a statement, Liverpool’s owners explained the reasoning behind the decision.“We have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward.“Again, it must be stressed that this is not a decision which has been reached lightly, anything but.”Despite the dismissal, Liverpool paid tribute to Slot’s achievements and contribution during his time at the club.“The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and — most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves – successful.“As such, our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater, particularly as it was underpinned by a work ethic, a diligence and a level of expertise which further underlined our view that he is a leader in his field.”Liverpool also confirmed that the search for Slot’s replacement has already begun as the club looks to bounce back from a disappointing season and re-establish itself among the leading teams in English and European football.
