Before the IPL 2026 final, Gujarat Titans openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan still had a chance of overtaking Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the race for the Orange Cap. However, both hopes ended inside the powerplay as Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s new-ball attack struck early in Ahmedabad. Gill managed just 10 before falling to Josh Hazlewood, while Sudharsan was dismissed for 12 by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Their early exits ensured that Sooryavanshi finished the season as the leading run-scorer in IPL 2026, capping off one of the most remarkable campaigns the tournament has ever witnessed. At just 15 years old, the Rajasthan Royals sensation dominated the season from start to finish. Sooryavanshi amassed 776 runs in 16 innings at an astonishing average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 237.31, numbers rarely seen in the history of the competition. His season was built on relentless aggression. Sooryavanshi struck 135 boundaries from only 327 balls faced, including a record-breaking 72 sixes. He also registered six scores of 50 or more, highlighted by a breathtaking 36-ball century. The teenager rewrote several IPL records along the way. His 72 sixes shattered the previous record of 59 set by Chris Gayle in 2012. More impressively, Sooryavanshi hit a six every 4.31 deliveries compared to Gayle’s rate of one every 7.73 balls during his famous season. He also became the youngest batter and the fastest by balls faced to reach 1,000 IPL runs. The landmark came during Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans, with Sooryavanshi reaching the milestone in just 440 deliveries, breaking Andre Russell’s previous record by 105 balls. Perhaps the most striking statistic from his season was his dominance in the powerplay. Of his 776 runs, a staggering 521 came in the first six overs, the highest tally ever recorded by a batter in that phase during a single IPL season.

Ishan Kishan 15 15 602 40.13 182.42 60 32

Sooryavanshi’s extraordinary season ends with yet another achievement, adding the Orange Cap to a campaign that has already redefined expectations of what a teenager can accomplish in the IPL.
