Gujarat Titans' IPL 2026 season: Consistent yet incomplete as title dream ends in final heartbreak

NEW DELHI: Gujarat Titans suffered heartbreak in the IPL 2026 final as they failed to cross the last hurdle despite entering the title clash as one of the most consistent teams of the tournament. Playing the final at their home ground, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where they had already played seven matches during the season, GT could not capitalise on familiar conditions and fell short against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.Despite the disappointment, Gujarat Titans once again reinforced their reputation as one of the IPL’s most successful franchises. Since making their debut in 2022, GT have reached three finals in five seasons and won the title in their maiden campaign under Hardik Pandya. GT entered IPL 2026 as one of the favourites but endured a shaky start, losing their first two matches against Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals. However, they quickly regained momentum and emerged as one of the dominant sides in the competition. The Titans won 9 of their 14 league-stage matches and secured a direct berth in Qualifier 1. Their campaign featured emphatic wins, including a 77-run thrashing of Rajasthan Royals, an 82-run demolition of Sunrisers Hyderabad and an 89-run hammering of Chennai Super Kings. The batting unit consistently posted big totals while the bowling attack, spearheaded by Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, Rashid Khan and Jason Holder, delivered throughout the season.Although GT suffered a crushing 92-run defeat to RCB in Qualifier 1, they bounced back magnificently. Chasing 215 against Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2, they produced one of the finest playoff performances of the season to storm into the final. However, the title clash turned out to be a one-sided affair. Apart from Washington Sundar’s unbeaten half-century, GT’s batting unit failed to fire. They managed only 155/8 before RCB chased down the target comfortably with five wickets in hand.

Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler: The driving forceA major reason behind Gujarat Titans’ success was the extraordinary performance of their top-order trio — Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler.Captain Gill led from the front, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer of IPL 2026 with 732 runs in 16 matches. He averaged 45.75, struck at 163.02 and scored one century and six fifties.Sai Sudharsan was equally impressive, amassing 722 runs in 17 matches at an average of 45.12 and a strike rate of 157.98. He registered one century and eight half-centuries, the most fifties by any batter in the tournament, while also topping the fours chart with 75 boundaries.England star Jos Buttler added further firepower with 526 runs in 17 matches at a strike rate of 152.46, including four half-centuries. Together, Gill, Sudharsan and Buttler accumulated 1,980 runs and formed the backbone of GT’s batting line-up.Jason Holder’s impactWest Indies all-rounder Jason Holder proved to be one of GT’s most valuable acquisitions. His height and ability to generate bounce troubled opposition batters throughout the season.Holder claimed 17 wickets in just 11 matches and regularly applied the brakes in the middle overs. He also showcased exceptional athleticism in the field, taking several stunning catches that helped turn games in Gujarat’s favour.Rabada and Siraj lead the bowling chargeKagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj formed one of the most effective new-ball partnerships in IPL 2026.Siraj’s ability to dry up runs and create pressure complemented Rabada’s wicket-taking threat perfectly. The duo consistently delivered early breakthroughs and played a crucial role in GT’s success.Rabada finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 29 wickets in 17 matches, winning the Purple Cap. Siraj also enjoyed an excellent season, claiming 19 wickets in 17 matches.Poor start, strong comebackGT’s campaign began disastrously with consecutive defeats against Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals. However, they quickly turned things around, winning three matches on the bounce.Despite a few setbacks in the middle phase of the tournament, Gujarat found consistency when it mattered most. Six wins in their final seven league matches ensured a top-two finish and a place in Qualifier 1.Although they stumbled against RCB in Qualifier 1, they responded brilliantly by knocking out Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 before eventually losing the final by five wickets.

What’s next for Gujarat Titans? While reaching three finals in five seasons is a remarkable achievement, Gujarat Titans may need to address their middle-order concerns going forward. The franchise relied heavily on Gill, Sudharsan and Buttler throughout the season. The middle order, featuring Rahul Tewatia, Washington Sundar and Nishant Sindhu, struggled for consistency and often failed to provide the finishing punch required. If GT can strengthen that area while retaining the core that has made them one of the IPL’s most successful teams, they will remain strong contenders for the title in 2027.
