Who founded the oldest cricket stadium in the world ?
Thomas Lord, a Yorkshire-born professional cricketer, opened his first cricket ground in 1787 at the present-day Dorset Square in London. This massive seven-acre field could accommodate over 2,000 spectators and even had a covered refreshment area. However, after modernisations and renovations, the venue can now accommodate nearly 31,000 spectators.The first match took place there on May 21, 1787, between the White Conduit Club and Middlesex County. When the lease expired in 1810, Lord moved to Lisson Grove for his second ground in 1811. However, Regent’s Canal construction cut through this site, forcing the site to shift once again.Yet remaining indelible, Lord established his third and final ground in St. John’s Wood in 1814, which remains the permanent ‘Home of cricket’ today.

Lord’s Cricket Ground is called the “Home of Cricket” as it has been the heart of cricket for over 200 years. The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), started in 1787, owns the venue and has its headquarters here. India won its maiden Cricket World Cup title at Lord’s
On June 25, 1983, India played the World Cup Final at Lord’s against the mighty West Indies. Though India batted first and scored only 183 runs, their bowlers stunned the world by bowling out the West Indies for 140. Mohinder Amarnath took 3 for 12 and was named Man of the Match, while Kapil Dev’s brilliant catch of Vivian Richards proved to be the turning point for the game. This victory gave India its first-ever World Cup title, changing cricket forever and igniting passion for the sport across the nation and upcoming batsmen like Dravid and Tendulkar.
The oldest cricket stadium compared to other historic grounds
Lord’s Cricket Ground, established in 1814, stands as the undisputed oldest cricket stadium in the world. The second oldest is Trent Bridge Ground, built in 1838, followed by The Oval in 1845, and The Sydney Cricket Ground, built in 1848. In India, Eden Gardens holds the title of the oldest cricket stadium, but it was established much later in 1864.
