Iran football team has officially received U.S. visas to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026, ending weeks of uncertainty and diplomatic complications just 10 days before their opening match. The breakthrough comes after growing concerns that Team Melli’s participation could be jeopardized due to delays in visa processing amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran. A White House official confirmed overnight that the visas had been finalized and issued, clearing the way for the Iranian delegation to travel for the tournament. The development follows public remarks from Iran’s ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, who revealed that the squad had yet to receive the necessary travel documentation. The Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) also reportedly sought FIFA’s intervention, urging world football’s governing body to ensure that the host nation fulfilled its obligations to provide equitable access to all qualified teams. The situation has created a historic first for the FIFA World Cup. Since the tournament’s inception in 1930, no host nation has welcomed a national team from a country with which it is engaged in an active military conflict.

Players and Staff Approved

According to U.S. officials familiar with the matter, all players on Iran’s national team have been approved for visas and are in the process of receiving them. Visas have also been issued to coaches, trainers and a number of support staff members. While officials confirmed that athletes and essential personnel had been cleared, it remains unclear whether all applicants associated with the team were approved. One official indicated that certain individuals may have been denied visas after allegedly applying under “false pretenses.“The officials spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the visa process. Iran is now awaiting the return of passports, which could arrive as early as Friday or Saturday, allowing the team to finalize travel plans.

Base Camp Shifted to Mexico

The visa delays forced Iran to revise its logistical arrangements for the tournament. Originally planning to establish a base camp in Arizona, the team opted against spending extended time in the United States.Instead, Iran secured expedited visa approvals from Mexican authorities and will establish its World Cup headquarters in Tijuana. The squad has been training in Antalya, Turkey, and is expected to travel directly to Mexico before entering the United States for matches. The Iranian Football Federation confirmed that the team had already received Mexican visas through the country’s embassy in Ankara.U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye Tom Barrack appeared to confirm the visa approvals Friday in a post on X.“Proud of our outstanding team at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara for their work processing visas for Iran’s national football team on their road to the FIFA World Cup in the United States,” he said.“Sports transcends borders, and we look forward to welcoming competitors and fans from around the world.”

Political Backdrop

The visa approval arrives months after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly questioned whether Iran should participate in the tournament. In March, Trump suggested it was not “appropriate” for Iran to compete and raised concerns regarding the safety of Iranian players. Iran’s national team responded firmly, insisting that “no one can exclude” the country from participating in football’s biggest event.Despite the political rhetoric, FIFA regulations require host nations to facilitate entry for qualified teams, officials and accredited personnel.

Iran’s World Cup Schedule

Iran has been drawn into Group G, with all three group-stage matches scheduled to take place on U.S. soil:June 15: Iran vs New Zealand – Los Angeles Stadium, InglewoodJune 21: Iran vs Belgium – Los Angeles Stadium, InglewoodJune 26: Iran vs Egypt – Seattle Stadium, Seattle
