Luigi Mangione's sister lands top doctor role at US university ahead of his murder trial; goes public with announcement

As Luigi Mangione awaits trial over the killing of UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, his family is moving forward with life away from the spotlight. His elder sister, MariaSanta Mangione, is set to begin a cardiovascular disease fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in July, reports the Daily Mail. The development comes just months before Luigi Mangione is due to stand trial in connection with the high-profile murder case. The competitive fellowship at Johns Hopkins is regarded as one of the most sought-after programmes in American medicine, with aspiring cardiologists spending years working towards a place.A social media post from Johns Hopkins recently confirmed MariaSanta’s appointment. Around the same time, she also restored her LinkedIn profile. This is a rare public move by a member of the Mangione family, which has retreated from public view since Luigi’s arrest in December 2024.Their is a contrast between the siblings’ lives.28-year-old Luigi remains behind bars in Brooklyn awaiting trial. MariaSanta is preparing to continue a distinguished career in medicine and scientific research.MariaSanta’s younger sister, 34-year-old Lucia Mangione Giulio continues to live in Baltimore, where she works as an artist. She married Paul Giulio in June 2022.The Mangione family has remained largely silent since Luigi’s arrest. Their only public statement said they were “shocked and devastated” by the allegations. The family also said they wished to “offer prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.”Luigi Mangione is accused of fatally shooting Thompson, a 59-year-old father of two, outside the Hilton Midtown hotel in Manhattan during a UnitedHealthcare conference. He planned the attack in advance and and writings were recovered after his arrest as evidence.Mangione wrote in October 2024 that he wanted to “whack” the CEO of a health insurance compan. Thompson was killed roughly six weeks later. In a journal entry, Luigi wrote: “I finally feel confident about what I will do. The details are coming together.“And I don’t feel any doubt about whether it’s right/justified. I’m glad, in a way, that I’ve procrastinated because it allowed me to learn more about (UnitedHealthcare).“The target is insurance. It checks every box.”Bullets recovered after the shooting bore the words “delay”, “deny” and “depose”, phrases that referenced criticisms of the health insurance industry.Mangione also secured a partial legal victory in May when a judge excluded some evidence recovered during his arrest. However, jurors will still be allowed to see his manifesto and the 9mm ghost gun linked to the crime. In a separate federal case, several charges, including murder through the use of a firearm, were dismissed. The ruling means Mangione no longer faces the possibility of the death penalty. He still faces two counts of interstate stalking, each carrying severe penalties. At a previous court appearance, Mangione protested, shouting: “One plus one equals two. This is the same trial twice. This is double jeopardy by any common-sense definition.”
