How to choose a house name that ages well: 6 Timeless tips every homeowner should know

A house name will serve as an identifying mark for years, maybe even for decades, or even centuries, depending on whether the house was bought by your descendants. Trendy names are appealing to everyone right now but may become outdated very soon as fashion changes. As opposed to that, a timeless house name will always seem elegant and relevant to you. No matter if it is a new house or the one you have been living in all of your life, a house name is worth being chosen with care in order to ensure that it will be relevant for the years to come. Here are six helpful tips on picking a house name that will last forever.

Think of meaning, not the fashion trends

One of the key things about time-honoured house names is that they usually have their own story. When picking the name of the house, don’t think about what is popular now; rather, consider words which express your personal values, goals or heritage. Words related to peace, hope, joy, nature, home and other universal notions usually never become old-fashioned and are likely to be cherished by future generations of your family.

Make it short and easy to remember

Sometimes a good name doesn’t need much effort and is quite easy to find. The shorter it is, the more likely it is to be memorable. Names which consist of one or two words make good first impression and are easy to pronounce. Short names also look more aesthetically appealing on a signboard and are easier to use while making an invitation or registering the address online.

Don’t include the fads or dates into the house name

Using words that refer to pop culture trends, movies, TV shows, or internet slang may seem interesting at the moment, but they may prove too specific. The house names containing dates or any temporary slogans may also sound out-of-date very soon. Timeless names usually refer to such universal topics as family, nature, architecture, literature and positive emotions.

Consider the visual appearance of the name on a sign board

The house name should look not only good but also visually harmonious when used on the signboard. Before taking the final decision on the name, think about how it will look when put on your gate, plaque or mailbox. The elegant name with good lettering is always easily readable and creates a positive first impression. Besides, pay attention to the font, spacing and material of the signboard.

Think about culture and language, relevance of the name

If your family knows several languages and your guests belong to different cultures, it is necessary to make sure that the name will be understood. The words with universally positive meaning, such as peace, harmony, joy, hope or home usually do well and keep their relevance despite the language differences. On the other hand, using a heritage name may also be a good option if it sounds elegant.

Imagine living in this house for decades

When thinking of a house name, try to imagine how it will look and suit the house in the future. Will the house name be appropriate in 20 years or so? Will it correspond to your new family and style? The name should naturally grow together with the house and its inhabitants. Thinking about the long-term perspectives may help to pick an appropriate name.
