Who was Madhav Mantri? The Mumbai cricket stalwart with four Tests who helped shape Sunil Gavaskar and stood alongside teenage Sachin Tendulkar in 1990

When the Mumbai Cricket Association decided to name lounges at the Wankhede Stadium after Sachin Tendulkar, Ajinkya Rahane and late Madhav Mantri, the first two names needed little explanation. The third may leave younger cricket fans wondering: who was Madhav Mantri? The answer is a story of influence far greater than his four-Test career suggests.Mantri was a three-time Ranji Trophy-winning captain of Bombay, a national selector and a prominent administrator who played a role in shaping Mumbai cricket’s culture. He also had a remarkable connection with two of India’s greatest batters, Sunil Gavaskar and Tendulkar, at very different stages of their careers.

The man who taught Gavaskar to earn his India cap

Mantri was Gavaskar’s maternal uncle, and his influence on the future India great began well before Gavaskar’s international debut. As a youngster, Gavaskar was fascinated by an India cap belonging to Mantri. He wanted to have it, but his uncle refused to let him simply inherit it. Gavaskar would have to earn his own. When Gavaskar eventually received an India cap during India’s 1971 tour of the West Indies, he did not wear it in the tour matches. He waited until he had actually represented India in a Test. For Mantri, the cap represented something that had to be earned. His own international career was brief. He made his Test debut against England in 1951 and played his last international against Pakistan in 1955. Across four Tests, he scored 67 runs, with a highest score of 39.But those numbers barely tell the story of his standing in Indian domestic cricket.

Three Ranji Trophy titles with Bombay

Mantri played 42 Ranji Trophy matches for Bombay and accumulated 2,787 runs at an average of 50.67. His finest innings came against Maharashtra in the 1948-49 season, when he scored 200 in a match that produced 2,376 runs and nine centuries. His greater legacy came as a leader.Mantri captained Bombay to Ranji Trophy titles in 1951-52, 1955-56 and 1956-57, helping establish the foundations of the dominance that would later become synonymous with Mumbai cricket. There was also an unfortunate slice of Test history attached to his career. During the 1952 Headingley Test against England, India were reduced to 0/4 in their second innings, with Fred Trueman and Alec Bedser ripping through the batting order. Mantri was one of those four batters dismissed before India had scored a run.His international career faded. His influence on Mumbai cricket did not.

The batting lesson behind Gavaskar’s greatness

Mantri’s impact on Gavaskar went beyond the famous India-cap story. On one occasion, Gavaskar returned home delighted after scoring around 290 in a college match during a huge partnership. But Mantri was less interested in the number. His immediate question was how Gavaskar had been dismissed.Gavaskar explained that he had fallen attempting a lofted shot while his partner remained unbeaten.Mantri’s response was straightforward: do not give your wicket away. Make the bowler earn it.That philosophy would become central to Gavaskar’s batting. The opener went on to score 10,122 Test runs and became the first batter to cross 10,000 in the format.Mantri’s Test tally was only 67.Yet one of the defining principles behind India’s first great batting superstar had been reinforced by a man whose own international career lasted just four Tests.

From Gavaskar to a teenage Tendulkar

Mantri’s influence did not stop with his nephew. He later served as a national selector and played a role in backing Ajit Wadekar’s selection for India. He also became president of the Mumbai Cricket Association and treasurer of the BCCI.Then, nearly four decades after his own Test debut, Mantri found himself alongside another teenage Mumbai batting prodigy. He was India’s team manager on the 1990 tour of England, when a 17-year-old Tendulkar was beginning to establish himself at international level. At Old Trafford, with India battling to save the second Test, Tendulkar struck an unbeaten 119, his maiden Test century. He became India’s youngest Test centurion at the time.Mantri was there as team manager as another Mumbai batter announced himself on the world stage. The teenager’s hunger also impressed him. Tendulkar was expected to be rested for a match against Derbyshire but wanted to play because he wanted to face Ian Bishop, one of the fastest bowlers around. He got his chance and scored an unbeaten century. After Tendulkar’s Old Trafford hundred, Mantri recalled that the teenager was not simply interested in celebrating. He wanted to know whether he had made mistakes during his innings. For Mantri, who had spent decades emphasising discipline and responsibility, that attitude mattered.

Why Madhav Mantri still matters

That is the real story behind the name now being attached to a lounge at Wankhede.Mantri may have scored only 67 Test runs, but his cricketing footprint was considerably larger. He led Bombay to three Ranji Trophy titles, influenced selection, held senior administrative positions and helped shape the thinking of Gavaskar.Decades later, he was also part of the Indian team setup when Tendulkar scored the first of his 100 international centuries. One Mumbai cricket generation followed another, and Mantri was there in the background for both. The MCA’s decision to name a Wankhede lounge after him alongside Tendulkar and Rahane brings that forgotten legacy back into focus.
