5 Vastu tips to follow before pitru paksha begins

Every year, as Pitru Paksha approaches, people start asking what they should donate, which rituals they should perform, or what should be offered in the name of their ancestors. But I feel the preparation should begin a little earlier, and from a much simpler place.Begin with your home. Our homes quietly collect things over the years. Clothes nobody wears, papers nobody needs, broken objects waiting to be repaired, old photographs lying in drawers, and sometimes belongings of departed family members that nobody wants to touch because emotions are attached to them. Before Pitru Paksha begins, spend some time looking at these spaces consciously.

1. Start with decluttering, but don’t declutter memories

Clean the house properly and remove things that have clearly completed their purpose. Broken household items, unused clothes, old packaging, non-working electronics and unnecessary papers do not need to remain simply because they have been there for years. But there is an important difference between clutter and memory. If something belonged to your grandparents or parents and carries genuine emotional value, don’t throw it away in the name of Vastu. Clean it, preserve it properly or pass it to the next generation with its story.Sometimes the problem is not an old object. It is an old object lying neglected.

2. Pay special attention to the south and south-west

In Vastu practice, I pay particular attention to the South and South-West when working with themes of family continuity, stability and ancestral connection.Check these areas before Pitru Paksha. Are there broken objects lying there? Unopened cartons? Old shoes? Things that were temporarily kept there three years ago and somehow became permanent?Clean and organise the area. You don’t need to buy a new Vastu remedy for it.Often, removing what shouldn’t be there is the first remedy.

3. Take out the family photographs

This is something I particularly recommend. Most families today have thousands of photographs on their phones but don’t know where the photograph of their great-grandfather is.Before Pitru Paksha, sit with the older photographs in your home. Clean the frames. Organise loose photographs. Digitise the fragile ones if required.More importantly, tell your children who these people were. What was your grandfather known for? Where did your grandmother come from? What did they build? What struggle did the family overcome?Pitru remembrance should not remain limited to names recited during a ritual.Stories are also a form of inheritance.

4. Repair what has been waiting forever

Every house has that one clock that doesn’t work, one chair waiting for repair, one broken frame kept inside a cupboard and one appliance everyone has collectively accepted will probably never work again. Before Pitru Paksha, make a decision.Repair it. Use it. Donate it if appropriate. Or respectfully let it go.I would particularly apply this principle to belongings inherited from departed family members. If you are preserving something because it matters, preserve it respectfully. Don’t keep your grandfather’s watch in a damp box for twenty years and call that remembrance.

5. Create one quiet space for gratitude

You don’t need to create an elaborate “ancestor corner” filled with remedies.Keep it simpler.During Pitru Paksha, there should be at least one clean, peaceful space in the house where you can sit for a few minutes, remember those who came before you, pray according to your family tradition and express gratitude.Because ultimately, Pitru Paksha is not only about asking:“What should I offer my ancestors?”There is another question worth asking:“What did I receive from them, and what am I doing with that inheritance?”Before Pitru Paksha begins, clean the house. But while cleaning, also look at what your family has been carrying for generations. Some things need to be preserved. Some need to be repaired. And some finally need to be released.
