5 homemade ant killer sprays that really work using simple kitchen ingredients

Nobody likes the idea of having ants at home, and it can be frustrating, especially if the ants are found on the counter or near the food area of your home. Some ants are harmless, but they can be destructive if not controlled properly. In most cases, people opt for the use of chemical sprays, but experts have indicated that this might not be the best option, as the problem of ants can be controlled using simple household items such as vinegar, lemon, sugar, or even soda. These items can be very effective, and the ants will not be able to come back. The best part of using these items, such as vinegar, lemon, sugar, or soda, is that they are harmless, especially if you have kids and pets at home, and they are also very affordable. It might take some attempts, but the use of simple household items has proven to be very effective in controlling the problem of ants at home.

Natural ways to keep ants away with everyday items

Vinegar

Vinegar is one of the easiest natural solutions for ants. Experts report that its strong smell interferes with ants’ pheromone trails, which they rely on to navigate and communicate. Without those trails, ants often get lost and avoid the area.To make a spray, you will need two cups of vinegar, two tablespoons of dish soap, and a little baking soda. Mix the ingredients gently in a bowl, pour the solution into a spray bottle, and fill it with water. Spray it wherever ants are active, and it should help disrupt their paths. Some people prefer apple cider vinegar, while others use white vinegar; both reportedly work well.

Dish Soap and Water

Dish soap is another surprisingly effective solution. You can mix two ounces of dish soap with 32 ounces of water in a spray bottle. Spraying this mixture directly on ants reportedly suffocates them by penetrating their exoskeleton. In addition to killing ants, this mixture can remove the pheromone trails that attract more ants. It seems like a simple and effective solution, especially when combined with regular cleaning to remove crumbs and spills.

Baking Soda and Boric acid

To have a more specific solution, baking soda and boric acid may be utilised to formulate ant traps. One cup of sugar, half a cup of water, two tablespoons of boric acid, and a pinch of baking soda may be mixed well and put in a small container with a lid. Small holes may be made in the lid of the container to enable the ants to get in.Ants are attracted to the sugar and consume the mixture. The baking soda and boric acid reportedly kill them over time. You can place these traps near areas where ants are commonly seen, such as behind cupboards or along window sills.

Ground pepper

Ground pepper can also deter ants. Sprinkling it under cabinets, behind appliances, or near entry points might discourage them from returning. To make a spray, mix ground pepper with water and leave it for one-hour and make the observations afterwards.

Lemon juice and honey

Lemon juice mixed with water is another option. Using a one-to-three ratio of lemon juice to water in a spray bottle reportedly works to repel ants. You can even use lemon peels, which contain natural oils that kill ants on contact.Baking soda mixed with confectioners’ sugar can also make a simple ant trap. Adding a small amount of honey or jam can help attract ants to the mixture. These ingredients lure ants and help control their numbers naturally.

Keeping ants away long-term

While sprays and traps are useful tools in getting rid of ants, prevention is also a good idea. Cleaning kitchen surfaces regularly, wiping out any crumbs on the counters, and sealing any cracks or crevices around the windows or doors will make your house less desirable to ants. If your window screens are torn, consider replacing them. Also, regularly checking areas that are prone to moisture is a good idea. Mixing up the different remedies in this article can keep ants from getting used to one particular remedy.
