Kuwait extends visit visas, eases residency rules as Middle East travel disruptions strand travellers

Amid ongoing travel disruptions linked to the escalating crisis in the Middle East, Kuwait has temporarily eased certain immigration rules to support travellers and residents affected by flight cancellations and airspace closures. All visitation visas that are about to expire or have already expired during the current disturbances will automatically be extended by one month, according to a statement released by the Kuwait Ministry of Interior.

The extension will apply from February 28, 2026, when the regional disruptions began affecting international travel across the Middle East. For travellers currently in Kuwait on visit visas, authorities clarified that no administrative action is required. The extension will be processed automatically through the ministry’s electronic systems.Additionally, given the exceptional conditions brought on by the regional crisis, all administrative fees and possible fines associated with visa overstays will be canceled during this time.

Three-month relief for residents stranded abroad

The Kuwaiti government has also announced relief measures for residents who are currently outside the country and unable to return due to flight disruptions.Usually, holders of a Kuwaiti residence permit cannot remain outside the country beyond a certain period without risking cancellation of their residency status. However, many residents have been unable to return as airlines suspend services and regional airspace closures continue.Authorities acknowledged that those impacted would automatically receive an extra three-month leave allowance due to the circumstances. As with the visa extension, this process will also be handled entirely through electronic systems, meaning residents do not need to submit applications or pay administrative fees. Officials added that these deadlines may be extended further if the regional situation worsens or travel disruptions persist.

Regional airspace disruptions affecting travel

The immigration relief measures are announced as air traffic disruptions persist in the Middle East amid military escalation in the region, which involves Iran, the US, and Israel.Kuwait, Qatar, Iraq, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates are among the Middle Eastern nations that have shut down or drastically reduced air travel since the end of February.Due to the air traffic delays, thousands of flights in the Middle East have been suspended, redirected, or delayed, and some international flights have also been suspended. As a result, hundreds of thousands of travellers have been stranded or forced to change travel plans, with some countries arranging repatriation flights and alternative travel solutions to help affected passengers return home.
