'Boong' director Lakshmipriya Devi brought India to the global stage at BAFTA in stunning Manipuri Moirang Phee inaphi and kaftan
India celebrated a historic win as Lakshmipriya Devi’s film ‘Boong’ secured the Best Children’s & Family Film award at the BAFTAs. Her choice to wear a Payal Khandwala kaftan paired with a Manipuri Moirang Phee inaphi, a traditional shawl, resonated deeply, showcasing Indian culture with understated elegance on the global stage. This cultural statement amplified the pride of her achievement.

Lakshmipriya Devi walking onto the BAFTA stage was already a proud moment for India. Her film Boong winning Best Children’s & Family Film made history – the first Indian film ever to take that award. But honestly, her outfit got people talking too. It was simple, elegant, and 100% Indian, quietly showing off her culture on one of the biggest red carpets in the world. She didn’t go for big Western labels. Instead, she wore a Payal Khandwala kaftan with a Manipuri Moirang Phee inaphi, a shawl that felt like a little nod to her home state. The kaftan flowed beautifully, and the shawl added a soft, meaningful touch. It wasn’t flashy, but it had presence. You could tell it meant something to her, and that made it feel real.In a room full of glittering gowns and dramatic looks, she stood out – quietly, confidently, and with culture. It was the kind of outfit that doesn’t shout for attention but makes people notice anyway. And yes, the country went a little crazy. Bollywood stars, filmmakers, and even the Prime Minister were congratulating her and the Boong team.Wearing Indian fashion on a night like this didn’t just go with the award. It made the moment stronger. Lakshmipriya carried a piece of India with her, and she did it with grace. The outfit, the win, the pride – it all came together perfectly.

And honestly, watching Lakshmipriya on that BAFTA stage was just… wow. You felt proud right along with her. She wasn’t just taking home an award, she was carrying a piece of India with her, our stories, our craft, all wrapped up in that kaftan and shawl. And let me tell you, those weren’t just pretty clothes – they were a statement. You could see it in her – calm, confident, totally owning it. Moments like that stick with you. They make you smile, feel connected, and just proud that our traditions and talent are finally shining on a global stage.
