Cactus Fruit: How to safely cut and eat this spiky fruit without getting hurt

Cactus fruit, also called prickly pear, may look intimidating at first glance, but beneath its spiky surface, it has a sweet and refreshing taste. Cactus fruit is a common sight in America, especially in Mexican dishes, but it is slowly gaining traction due to its distinct taste and health benefits. Yet, before you take a bite, there is one thing you must do first, and it is not optional: you must prepare it properly. Cactus fruit has tiny, hair-like thorns called glochids, which require special care when cleaning and peeling. Once you have cleaned it properly, you can enjoy its soft, juicy taste in many ways.

What is cactus fruit

The fruit of the cactus plant can be found growing along the edges of flat pads formed by the plant. Cactus fruit is usually in the shape of a pear but can vary in different colours like red, yellow, and green. The skin is thick and contains tiny thorns called glochids. The inside part of the fruit is soft and juicy with small edible seeds inside. The taste is similar to a combination of watermelon, pear, and kiwi fruit. Though not as popular as other fruits, it is enjoyed in most places where it is found growing in nature.

How to choose ripe cactus fruit

It is important to select the right cactus fruit, not only for taste but also for texture. The taste of an unripe cactus fruit is not as enjoyable as that of a ripe one, which makes it important to look out for a ripe one.A ripe cactus fruit will have a rich, vibrant colour, which is usually red, but there are other colours like yellow and green. The fruit will also feel heavy for its size, which means it has a lot of juice. Another way of identifying a ripe cactus fruit is by the texture of its skin, which should feel smooth since the glochids become less prickly as the fruit ripens. When buying a cactus fruit from a store, the thorns are usually removed, but if they are not, it is not advisable to handle the fruit with your bare hands.

How to cut cactus fruit safely

Cactus fruit needs a little care in preparation, especially because of the glochids on the surface. Although small, the glochids can stick to your skin, irritating it.First, you need to remove the glochids. You can do this by rubbing the cactus gently using a paper towel or holding it using tongs and passing it through an open flame. This will burn the glochids. However, you need to be very careful not to scatter the spines in your workspace.Once you have removed the glochids, you can now prepare the cactus fruit. Place it on a cutting board, horizontal. Remove both ends, and then make a small incision along the length of the cactus. However, do not cut too deep. Using your fingers, you can now remove the skin. If the cactus is ripe, the skin will come off easily. Once you have removed the skin, you can now cut it as you wish.

How to eat cactus fruit safely

Once the fruit is peeled, it can be consumed completely from the inside. The inside of the fruit is soft, juicy, and slightly grainy because of the seeds. The seeds are completely edible, though one may choose to remove them while cooking the fruit. The best way to have this fruit is to have it fresh. Once it’s cut, it can be consumed as it is. The fruit tastes sweet, which makes it great to have during summer. While consuming the fruit, one should be sure not to have the outer layer of the fruit, even if the thorns are removed. This part of the fruit is tough and tastes bad.

Ways to serve cactus fruit

The fruit of the cactus is quite versatile and can be utilised in many different recipes. One of the simplest uses of the fruit is to incorporate it into fruit salads, as it tastes well with other fruits. The fruit can also be blended into a juice or puree that is often utilised to make a drink called agua fresca. The juice is sweet in nature and can be consumed as a drink or even as a dessert. The fruit of the cactus can also be utilised to make jams, syrups, and candies. The fruit is quite colourful and flavorful, making it a popular choice for many recipes.

Why proper preparation matters

What is unique to cactus fruit, in comparison to most other fruits, is that it requires careful handling. While the glochids may be small, they can be irritating if not properly removed. However, taking a few minutes to clean and peel the fruit will make it not only safe to eat but also enjoyable. When properly cleaned and peeled, cactus fruit is not only tasty but also easy to add to your daily meals. The taste and freshness of the fruit make it worth the work to turn what may seem to be a difficult fruit to eat into something simple.
