Chatfishing: How AI is creeping into your dating life (And ruining real romance) - How to fix it

Remember when dating apps were all about perfect selfies? Now, the real drama is in your inbox: Is that flirty banter from a human… or a sneaky AI bot? Welcome to chatfishing – the latest twist in online dating where people outsource their charm to artificial intelligence (AI). It’s making swipes feel fake, connections shallow, and heartbreak harder to spot.

From curated profiles to AI ghostwriters

Dating apps once got flak for letting us airbrush our lives into Instagram perfection. Today, as per Scientific American, the worry is deeper: People are handing over their keyboards to AI. Paste a message into ChatGPT, fire up a “wingman app,” or use built-in coaching tools – and boom, you’ve got smooth replies without breaking a sweat.A 2025 Norton study titled ‘Romance Reimagined: How AI is Playing Cupid (and Catfish)‘ in 2025 backs it up: 6 in 10 dating app users think they’ve chatted with AI at least once. And get this – most of us can’t tell the difference!

Why AI is being used in text-only flirting

It’s not just lazy daters. Text chats strip away what makes us human: Voice inflections, eye crinkles, that nervous laugh. We evolved for face-to-face sparks, but apps boil love down to emojis and wit. Guess who excels there? Machines. AI crafts perfect pick-up lines faster than you can type “hey.” It’s efficient, sure – but is it real? This “text-based intimacy” glitch amplifies chatfishing. Why worry about what to say while chatting with a potential partner when a bot can keep the conversation sizzling? The result? Matches that fizzle in real life consent blurred by hidden helpers, and emotional bonds built on digital sand.

7 red flags you’re being chatfished (Not catfished)

Catfishing is the fake profile scam we know. Chatfishing? Real person, robot words. Spot it early with these signs:1. Replies come too fast, and are always too perfect2. You receive very generic compliments3. Their texts have an eerily consistent tone4. They dodge voice/video calls wherever you ask them to5. Their advanced vocabulary mismatches with their bio on the dating app6. They have repetitive phrasing patterns7. Sudden topic mastery: Zeroes in on your niche hobby with expert facts—Googled or generated? If three or more of these signs sound true, then maybe you are being chatfished. Share a voice note with your potential partner or suggest a quick call to verify if it is them or an AI bot trying to win over your heart. It’s better to know a hard truth now than to get your heart broken in the near future.

The fix

Executive health expert Bruce Y. Lee, M.D., M.B.A., writes in Psychology Today: “The only way you can accurately uncover chatfishing is to meet and observe the real people behind the messages. Chatfishing is yet another reason why you don’t want to stay in the message-but-don’t-meet phase of dating for too long. Try to segue into at least phone or video conversations as soon as possible to make it less likely that you are talking to someone or something else. After all, tech stuff like smartphones, online messaging, and AI are supposed to facilitate human interactions. Not replace them.”Have you been chatfished? Share your story in the comments below!
