After finally being released from state prison, Vedam was immediately taken into federal immigration custody and now faces deportation to India while appealing a 1999 removal order. The Board of Immigration Appeals agreed this month to hear his appeal, citing ‘exceptional circumstances’.
What led to the current legal battle?
Vedam’s legal troubles began with his conviction for the 1980 murder of a college friend. In August 2025, a Pennsylvania judge dismissed the murder conviction after discovering that prosecutors had withheld ballistics evidence during his trials.Before the murder case, Vedam had served time in the 1980s for small-scale LSD delivery. His lawyer, Ava Benach, says that the drug charge was minor and occurred more than 40 years ago, far from large-scale drug trafficking. However, federal immigration authorities cited the drug felony as grounds for deportation, arguing it makes Vedam a potential safety risk despite decades of rehabilitation.
