The life of former Prince Andrew, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, has been a whirlwind of royal glamour and recent scandals, from his Jeffrey Epstein ties to fresh legal troubles with UK police. Amid the headlines, curiosity swirls around the woman who has been by his side longer than most realise: his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson. Popularly called “Fergie“, she and Andrew were married for just six years, after which they got divorced. They’ve been separated for nearly three decades—yet she still lives with him at Royal Lodge in Windsor. What’s the story behind their unusual setup? Let’s unpack Fergie’s journey, their quirky bond, and why divorce didn’t mean goodbye for Andrew and Sarah:

Meet Sarah Ferguson: From royal bride to bestselling author

Born October 15, 1959, Sarah Ferguson shot to fame as Prince Andrew’s wife and Duchess of York before their recent downfall. Their 1986 Westminster Abbey wedding made her Her Royal Highness, captivating millions with her fiery red hair and bubbly charm. Mother to Princesses Beatrice (1988) and Eugenie (1990), she traded palace life for purpose. Today, she’s an author with over 60 books, including beloved kids’ series like ‘Budgie the Little Helicopter’ and ‘Little Red’. Her charity heart shines too—founding Children in Crisis in 1993 after a girl’s cancer story inspired her to build schools and train teachers in war-torn spots like Afghanistan. Despite royal scrutiny, Fergie has reinvented herself as a storyteller and giver.

Andrew and Fergie have known each other for a major part of their lives. They were toddler friends playing polo at age three, thanks to her dad (a retired major and polo manager for King Charles). As fate would have it, they were reintroduced in 1985 through Princess Diana, Sarah’s cousin-in-law, who played matchmaker. Sparks flew fast, and Andrew proposed to Sarah months later with a ruby-diamond ring, nodding to her red locks. On July 23, 1986, Andrew and Sarah had a fairy-tale wedding, and they were given the titles of Duke and Duchess. But bliss faded quickly. Andrew’s naval duties kept him away; Sarah later revealed they’d lived together just 40 days in their first five years. Loneliness hit hard amid media jabs comparing her to Diana. Kids brought joy, but distance won. They separated in 1992 after six years—though Fergie insisted it wasn’t her heart’s choice.

Divorce drama

In a candid Harper’s Bazaar chat earlier, Fergie explained the split: “I didn’t want a divorce but had to because of circumstance. I wanted to work; it’s not right for a princess of the royal house to be commercial, so Andrew and I decided to make the divorce official so I could go off and get a job.” Andrew’s naval absences were the killer—she felt isolated in a gilded cage. Yet, their co-parenting pact endured, raising Beatrice and Eugenie as a team, with no bitterness. Fergie’s warmth won hearts, even as tabloids pounced on her post-royal pivots like financial woes. Resilience defined her.

After 30 Years Together (Apart), Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s Shared Royal Life Is Officially Over

Divorced 30+ years, yet Fergie and Andrew shared the Royal Lodge like an old married couple—cooking breakfasts, jetting off on vacation with their kids, facing scandals side-by-side. She called him her “best friend”; he’s her rock through the Epstein fallout and her cancer battles in 2023. No romance reboot—just a practical partnership. They prioritised their daughters and grandkids, shielding them from drama. In 1996, Sarah once remarked about her relationship with Andrew after their divorce: “My duty is to him. I am so proud of him. I stand by him and always will. The way we are is our fairy tale. Although we are not a couple, we really believe in each other. The Yorks are a united family,” she had said.Until their disgraced fall due to their ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.Sarah Ferguson distances herself from Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor amid title loss and Epstein falloutJust months ago, Sarah Ferguson stood firmly by ex-husband Prince Andrew’s side. But explosive revelations—from title stripping to leaked Epstein emails—have shifted the ground beneath her. Once dubbed the “happiest divorced couple,” sharing Royal Lodge for decades, Fergie is now reportedly pulling away. Let’s break down the dramatic turn, from lost honours to separate paths.

Andrew’s titles stripped—Sarah’s initial stance

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson

Prince Andrew, the now-infamous Duke of York, married Sarah Ferguson in 1986 in a glamorous royal wedding. However, constant tabloid scrutiny and scandals took a toll on their marriage. And by 1996, the couple divorced, though they maintained a close friendship even after. Sarah’s infamous “toe-sucking” scandal splashed across tabloids, which ultimately lead to their split as one of the most talked-about British royal divorces of the 1990s.

Back in October 2025, after Andrew voluntarily dropped his royal titles and honours, a source told HELLO! that Sarah—who’d long used the courtesy title Duchess of York—”would always support her former husband’s decisions and do anything for the King.” The insider added, “For her, this will not make a big difference.”That solidarity held—until Virginia Giuffre’s memoir ‘Nobody’s Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice’ dropped bombshells. Giuffre alleged she was forced to get intimate with Andrew three times, reigniting scrutiny.

King Charles acts: Royal Lodge eviction and separate homes

King Charles didn’t hesitate. Post-memoir, he formally stripped Andrew of all titles, honours, and styles—plus served notice to vacate Royal Lodge, Andrew and Sarah’s shared Windsor home for 30+ years. Insiders said Sarah would arrange her own place.Andrew exited in early February, landing temporarily at Wood Farm before a permanent move to Marsh Farm on the Sandringham Estate. A December HELLO! source confirmed Sarah won’t follow: “She has stood by him all these years but is now ready to spread her wings. She won’t be moving in with him to the new house… Eugenie’s home in Portugal is a contender while she finds somewhere.” PEOPLE noted she’s eyeing Windsor spots.

Epstein emails rock Fergie: “Lying low” and needing distance

The U.S. Department of Justice’s January release of 3+ million Epstein files included damning Sarah correspondence. In 2010 emails, she gushed: Calling him the “brother I have always wished for” and “a legend.” In another, she had written, “I really don’t have the words to describe, my love, gratitude for your generosity and kindness. Xx I am at your service. Just marry me.”Ouch! The former Duchess is now “lying low while she ‘gets her head together’,” as per reports. On February 10, Daily Mail spotted her skiing French Alps with friends, then UAE-bound, plus time with daughter Princess Eugenie at Doha Art Basel. To pals: “When I come back I am going to have to put some distance between myself and Andrew.” She’s eyeing work to rebuild financially and emotionally. From cohabiting exes to solo flights—Sarah’s rewriting her next chapter amid scandals. Royal loyalty tested, she’s choosing self-preservation. What’s next for Fergie?
