Should you wash new clothes before wearing them? The answer might surprise you

There is something nice about wearing brand-new clothing right out of the bag. Whether it is something you have been waiting to get or something you have been saving for, there is no doubt that the temptation to wear it as soon as possible is great. However, something that many people fail to notice is that their clothing is not necessarily clean. From chemicals to handling, clothing must go through many different steps before it is ready to be worn.Because of this, skipping the first wash may not always be the best idea. Although it may not present immediate issues, there are a number of reasons why washing new clothes can make a difference.

Why washing new clothes is a good idea

During production, they are treated with dyes, finishers, and other chemicals that help keep them in good condition during transport and display. These chemicals may stay on the fabric even when we bring them home.Washing helps to remove excess dye, chemicals on the surface, and dirt that may have accumulated along the way. Clothes may travel through many environments and stages, increasing their chances of acquiring unwanted chemicals.

What could be on new clothes

Yet, while clothing may appear clean and fresh when you purchase it, it may also carry more than just fabric fibres. Chemicals such as formaldehyde resins, used to prevent wrinkles, and starch, used to give clothing body, may be present.Furthermore, clothing in stores may have been worn by multiple people while they were on display. Bacteria, fungi, and even viruses can linger on clothing for long periods of time. This makes unwashed clothing a possible source for unwanted bacteria.

How washing improves comfort and fit

Aside from hygiene, washing your new clothes can also help them feel and fit better. Clothes are usually stretched and kept in a state of tension during manufacturing. Washing them releases this tension, allowing them to assume their natural shape. This is particularly true for cotton garments, which will likely shrink a little during the first wash. Washing them will also help soften them, making them more pleasant to wear.

When you might skip washing

Although washing is encouraged, there are certain circumstances where it might not be necessary. Clothing that does not have direct contact with the body, like jackets, does not have to be washed. In the same way, clothing with the tag “dry clean only” should not be washed, as it might damage the fabric. Additionally, sweaters worn over other clothing are considered safe, although personal opinion might vary.

What happens if you don’t wash new clothes

This may not cause any problems, especially if you don’t have sensitive skin. However, there is still a possibility of skin irritation because of chemicals and other colours left behind. This may cause itching and other allergic reactions. Dark clothing, especially denim jeans, may cause colour transfer to your skin, other clothing, and even furniture. This is especially true after the first few uses.

Tips for washing new clothes properly

For better results, it is always recommended that you check the care label before you wash your clothes. The care label gives you instructions on how to wash your clothes, and this helps you avoid damage. Washing your clothes in cold water is generally safe for most fabrics.Washing your clothes in cold water and using gentle cycles in dryers helps maintain the quality of your clothes. Air drying or using low heat settings helps prevent shrinking, fading, and stretching. For dark and bright colours, it is recommended that you wash them separately for the first few cycles.
