The Himalayas, known for their natural beauty and cultural significance, were on the brink of neglect until Jyotsna Sitling stepped in. As the recipient of the Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar Award, Sitling has dedicated her life to preserving and restoring the region.

Sitling's efforts began with cleanup drives, collecting a staggering 15 truckloads of garbage weighing up to 50 tonnes. But her work didn't stop there—she ensured that the garbage was sent for recycling and not just dumped elsewhere.

Between 1997 and 2000, Sitling mobilised a community of nearly eleven thousand people across 82 villages to spend at least one day per year on the restoration of their villages. Her efforts were not just limited to cleaning up the environment but also included planting trees, building infrastructure, and promoting sustainable living.
