UAE travel update: Airspace reopens as GCAA lifts precautionary measures; flights resume normal operations

Air navigation across the United Arab Emirates has returned to normal, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) confirmed, marking a restoration of regular flight operations after a brief but significant disruption triggered by regional security concerns, as per WAM news agency. According to the news service, the GCAA announced that all temporary precautionary measures imposed on the country’s airspace have now been lifted following a comprehensive review of operational and security conditions. The authority stated that the decision was taken in close coordination with relevant agencies to ensure the continued safety of flight paths across the region.

Officials emphasised that while normal operations have resumed, continuous real-time monitoring of the airspace remains in place. This heightened vigilance is intended to respond swiftly to any changes in the regional security environment and to maintain the highest levels of aviation safety. The reopening comes after the UAE temporarily shut its airspace earlier this week as an “exceptional precautionary measure.” The move followed the activation of national air defence systems in response to incoming missile and drone threats reportedly originating from Iran, amid escalating tensions in the region.

Authorities said the temporary suspension was necessary to safeguard civilian aircraft, air crews, and national infrastructure. In Dubai, residents had reported loud explosions, which officials later clarified were the result of successful interceptions carried out by the country’s defence systems. Despite the interceptions, the security situation had several tangible effects on the region’s infrastructure. In Abu Dhabi, a drone strike resulted in a fire at the Shah gas field, which is one of the largest of its kind in the region. The authorities confirmed that the situation had been brought under control, though operations are still suspended as the authorities seek to assess the potential damage. The event is part of the conflict in the region that has been ongoing during the recent weeks and involves the United States, Israel, Iran, and other parties. There have been several reports of retaliatory attacks on military sites in the area since the start of the conflict. In a statement after the reopening, the GCAA recognized the cooperation from the passengers and the airlines during the situation, while reasserting the readiness of the operational and technical teams in the event of future situations. The authorities also advised the public to rely only on credible sources of information for updates concerning flights and airspace status, in a bid to avoid the spread of false information during critical times. In other news, the Dubai Police confirmed that traffic is flowing normally on major roads leading to Airport Road following the closure of the intersection leading to Al Amiri Airport. Roads connecting Al Khawaneej Street to Al Rashidiyah have also been reopened, easing access for travellers heading to and from the airport. With both air and road networks stabilised, normalcy is gradually returning, even as authorities continue to closely monitor the evolving regional situation.
