Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's biggest challenge yet! Trial by fire vs Jasprit Bumrah

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s meteoric rise in cricket has already been filled with dramatic highs, and all eyes have been on him since. But his next challenge could well define the next phase of his journey. As Rajasthan Royals prepare to face Mumbai Indians in Guwahati, the teenage sensation is set to come up against the ultimate test in modern-day T20 cricket – Jasprit Bumrah.Just one match after a sensational 35-ball century that announced him to the world last season in the IPL, Sooryavanshi was brought back to earth with a two-ball duck, dismissed by Deepak Chahar. This was Rajasthan Royals only meeting with Mumbai Indians in the 2025 season. But much has changed since that moment. The teenager has piled on runs across Under-19 and domestic cricket and has returned this season looking even more assured. He has already stamped his authority with explosive knocks of 52 off 17 and 31 off 18 in his first two innings, playing a key role in Rajasthan Royals winning their opening two matches. Now, alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, he returns at the top with renewed purpose. Their aggressive starts have given Rajasthan Royals early momentum this season, but facing Bumrah presents a completely different examination. The Mumbai Indians spearhead remains the benchmark for fast bowling, and Sooryavanshi has never faced him in a professional contest. For a 15-year-old, board exams are among the toughest challenges – something Sooryavanshi has skipped this year to focus on cricket. For him, the real test arrives under floodlights against one of the toughest bowlers in the world. It is the kind of moment that has historically shaped great careers. From Sachin Tendulkar taking on legends like Wasim Akram and Shane Warne early in his career to modern-day prodigies being tested on the biggest stage, such battles often define temperament as much as technique.“It’s a great opportunity to test yourself against the best. And he is going to be up against the best tomorrow night. Bumrah is just bowling on a different level to everybody else in world cricket. As a youngster, it’s a golden opportunity. At 15 years old, he gets to play the best. He is not just holding his own. He is doing way better than anybody would have thought. Kudos to the youngster,” Kevin Pietersen said on Star Sports. What makes the contest even more intriguing is how teams have begun to decode Sooryavanshi. The left-hander thrives on anything in his arc on the leg side, particularly between long-on and square leg. Attempts to attack his stumps or test him with short balls have often backfired, playing into his strengths and allowing him to dominate. However, Mumbai Indians possess the discipline and variety to challenge that pattern. With a seasoned bowling unit, they are well-equipped to probe his technique and patience. Alongside a Bumrah, Sooryvanshi will probably have to contend with the likes of Trent Boult and Hardik Pandya as well. But the 5-time champions, the preparations for the youngsters are going to be the same as for any player. “Vaibhav (Sooryavanshi) is not new – this is his second year, and we know he is a good player. Our preparation will be the same as for any other player,” MI bowling coach Paras Mhambrey said ahead of the fixture in Guwahati. With Rajasthan Royals eyeing the top of the table and Mumbai Indians looking to bounce back, the spotlight inevitably falls on this fascinating duel. When a fearless young prodigy meets the precision of a world-class operator, the outcome could shape not just the match, but the narrative of a rising career.
