Poila Boisakh, also known as Noboborsho, the Bengali New Year, is around the corner, and everyone can feel the festive fervor! It is not just a mere date on the calendar; rather, it is that time of the year when Bengalis around the world immerse their souls in devotion and celebration of the new beginning. This year Poila Boishakh will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. As per the Bengali calendar, this year will mark the beginning of the year 1433. On this day, seeking the blessings of the almighty and elders of the family is believed to bring prosperity. Why do people celebrate Poila Boishak?Poila Boishak is one of the most prominent Bengali festivals, and the tradition of this festival dates back to the Mughal era. People believe that Badashah Akbar introduced this custom to mention the tax year. Royal astronomer Fathullah Shirazi was asked to create a new calendar amalgamating the lunar Islamic calendar and solar Hindu calendar. It was believed that this new calendar would help in managing harvest tax. Moreover, as per age-old books, Bangladeshi academic and folklorist Shamsuzzaman Khan traced back the culture of this celebration to Nawab Murshid Quli Khan, a Mughal governor, who made this day a celebratory affair for land tax collection. Over the years, this festival has been observed as the beginning of a happy and prosperous new year. This emphasis on cleanliness is why people see cleaning the house as one of the most important things before the big day. Here’s why cleaning the house before Poila Boishak is such an essential part of the festival.

Seeking the blessing of the divineIt is believed that cleaning the house is an essential ritual before inviting Goddess Lakshmi into the house, which is a quintessential part of Poila Boisakh. As per tradition, people believe that Goddess Lakshmi only lives in clean and pure places. If the home is dirty and messy, it attracts unwanted negative energies and drains prosperity. By cleaning our home before Poila Boisakh, we are making a place for Goddess Lakshmi and seeking her blessing for a prosperous life.Clearing the energyCleaning the house also helps cleanse its prana, which can accumulate over time as the house collects feelings like arguments and stress, ultimately affecting its energy. According to Vastu Shastra, keeping a clean and organized space clears the negative energy that stays in messy places. Especially when we clean our home before Poila Boisakh, we ensure that it is free from this energy. We are letting air and light into our home. This helps everyone in the home feel healthy and happy.

New venturesPoila Boisakh is also a time for beginnings. For businesses, it is a time to start accounting books; this practice is called Halkhata, which is like starting a chapter in our lives. When we clean our home and get rid of useless things, we tell the universe that we are ready for new things. We are making space for things to come into our lives.Sun’s blessingsThe Sun is essential during Poila Boisakh. Its rays are special. Can purify our home. When we clean our windows and doors, we are letting this sunlight into our home. Many people also decorate their homes with art and hang mango leaves at the entrance. By keeping out bad energy, this practice allows only good energy into our home. It sets a tone for the rest of the year and helps us stay happy and healthy.
