Yami Gautam reveals the simple secret behind her happy marriage with Aditya Dhar: "We don't..."

Filmmaker Aditya Dhar is much in the news lately with the tremendous success of his film Dhurandhar. And now, in a recent interview, his wife-actress Yami Gautam revealed the one mantra that keeps their marriage going strong. For the unversed, Yami and Aditya have always kept their relationship low-key – from keeping their dating life away from the public gaze to having a hush-hush wedding in 2021. Now they are parents to son Vedavid, whom they welcomed in 2024. And it seems, over the years, their relationship has only grown stronger.Talking to the Free Press Journal, Yami revealed the one habit she and her husband Aditya swear by that keeps their bond rock-solid. “We don’t overanalyse everything,” Yami said. It’s a simple and straightforward approach to relationships, in a world that is obsessed with decoding every little miss. Yami’s words remind us that love grows on simplicity, and not endless scrutiny about what went wrong in the relationship.

Yami Gautam-Aditya Dhar’s marriage mantra

Speaking to Free Press Journal, Yami got real about what makes their marriage work. “We don’t overanalyse everything. We just love and respect each other for who we are,” she shared. “I don’t know how to define love. It’s an emotion where you feel it, or don’t feel it. I think one of the most important elements in a relationship is respect. Mutual respect is very important.”No grand theories or therapy-speak- just pure, everyday respect.

Why mutual respect is the key to successful relationships

Yami spoke the truth– respect is the secret sauce to successful relationships. It helps turn differences with your partner into growth opportunities, not arguments. When you respect your partner, you approach disagreements with curiosity. Instead of blaming or defensiveness, you try to understand their point of view.Without it, even the sweetest affection feels shaky. Admiration becomes “if you change this,” and love turns conditional. But with mutual respect, fights lose their sting. You celebrate each others’ strengths, forgive flaws, and grow together as a couple. Psychologists like John Gottman back this up – couples who show genuine respect during tough talks have a 5:1 ratio of positive to negative interactions, key to lasting happiness.

Love in little actions

Yami’s insight gives a modern yet practical approach to love. Forget dramatic gestures or couple challenges—the real magic happens in the little things we do every day in life. Laughing off a bad day together. Opting for softness when tensions rise. That’s sustainability. For Indian couples juggling careers, in-laws, and chaos, this hits home. When couples treat each other with love and respect, it helps them go through the ups and downs of life together. Afterall, love is a universal language; as Yami puts it, love is felt, not dissected. What’s the one habit keeping your relationship strong? Mutual respect, or something else?
