Quote of the day from the Mahabharat: “Do Not Do to Others What Is Not Pleasing to Yourself."
Drawing from the depths of the Mahabharata, we discover profound insights that are just as relevant today. The Anushasana Parva imparts a vital message: “Do Not Impose on Others What Would Displease You Yourself.” This call for introspection, rooted in the principles of Dharma, is essential for cultivating empathy and maintaining balanced relationships in our rapidly changing world.

The epic ancient text Mahabharata is full of teachings on timeless principles for human conduct. The sacred guide is rooted in the principles of Dharma and how a human should live, make decisions, and uphold morality in complex situations.Today, we shall discuss one of the popular quotes in the Mahabharat that teaches about ethics and empathy.

“Do Not Do to Others What Is Not Pleasing to Yourself”

“आत्मनः प्रतिकूलानि परेषां न समाचरेत्”Ātmanah pratikūlāni pareṣāṁ na samācharet. This line appears in the Anushana Parva in the Mahabharat. The Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata contains extensive discussions on dharma, or righteous living. Many of these teachings are delivered by Bhishma while he lies on the bed of arrows after the Kurukshetra war, sharing wisdom with Yudhishthira about governance, morality, and duty. The core of the line reminds one that if something causes you pain, discomfort, or injustice, then you shouldn’t do the same to another person.

The deeper meaning

This verse is often described as the universal rule of ethics. In simple words, it just means being empathetic towards other humans. Before acting, imagine yourself in the other person’s position. If the action would hurt, insult, or disadvantage you, then it is morally wrong to do it to someone else. This teaching emphasizes yet another important truth about human relationships. Conflicts arise when one fully focuses on their own desires and needs, rather than considering how the same would impact their fellow human beings.

The takeaway

Despite being written thousands of years ago, this line remains incredibly relevant in today’s world, too. Taking the true essence of the verse, before making a harsh statement, or writing that quirky comment, or before taking that evil step against your old friend, take a pause and think, how will I feel if this happens to me?
