World’s biggest ‘maternity ward’: 41,000 giant turtles gather on a single Amazon beach

Deep in the Amazon basin, something remarkable happens every year. Along a stretch of sandy riverbank, thousands upon thousands of giant turtles crawl out of the water at almost the same time. The sight must be extraordinary. Scientists studying the area say it might be the largest wildlife “maternity ward” ever recorded. Using drones, researchers recently counted more than 41,000 giant South American river turtles gathering to nest along the Guaporé River, which forms part of the border between Brazil and Bolivia. According to Discover Wildlife, a rare glimpse into the secret life of one of the world’s biggest freshwater turtles. It also shows how modern technology is quietly changing the way scientists study wildlife in remote places.

How 40,000 turtles create Earth’s biggest maternity ward

That is roughly what researchers saw when they began surveying the nesting site along the Guaporé River. The species involved is the giant South American river turtle, Podocnemis expansa. It’s a hefty animal. Adults can grow close to 90 centimetres long and may weigh up to 80 kilograms. Every year, usually around July and August, female turtles gather on sandy banks across parts of the Amazon basin. They come to dig nests and lay eggs. This behaviour isn’t unusual for turtles, but the scale here seems almost unbelievable. More than forty thousand turtles in one place.Experts say the species has always been known for nesting in large groups. Still, the size of this gathering surprised researchers. Some scientists have even described it as the world’s largest known nesting colony for freshwater turtles.

Why counting turtles isn’t easy

On a busy nesting beach with thousands of turtles crawling in different directions, the challenge becomes even bigger. Traditional surveys often involve researchers walking along the nesting site and tallying what they see. It takes time. And it’s easy to make mistakes. In this case, ground observers initially counted around 16,000 turtles. But when researchers later reviewed drone aerial photographs, the numbers jumped dramatically. One early estimate suggested nearly 79,000 turtles might be present.

How drones helped scientists solve the counting puzzle

Researchers from the University of Florida and the Wildlife Conservation Society used drones to photograph the nesting area repeatedly over several days. Each flight captured thousands of images of the riverbank. Around 1,500 photos per flight. The pictures were later stitched together into huge high-resolution maps called orthomosaics. These detailed images allowed scientists to examine every part of the nesting site more carefully. Turtles move constantly, which means the same individual might appear in multiple photos. They marked the shells of 1,187 turtles with small patches of white paint. Nothing harmful. Just enough to identify them from the air. By tracking which turtles appeared repeatedly in the images, researchers built statistical models to estimate the real population size.

Significance of the giant gathering of river turtles

The giant South American river turtle has faced serious pressure for decades. In many parts of the Amazon, their eggs have historically been harvested for food. Adults have also been hunted, and nesting beaches sometimes disappear when rivers change or development spreads. If conservation groups can track population trends, they can figure out whether protection measures are working. If numbers drop, it’s a warning sign. This massive nesting colony might represent one of the species’ most important breeding sites. Turtles rarely get the spotlight in rainforest stories.
