‘It: Welcome to Derry Season 2’: Andy and Barbara Muschietti share word on official update

The world of Stephen King’s It isn’t finished with us yet. After a big first season, ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ is coming back for round two. But if you’re waiting for a release date, you’ll need a little patience. Co-creators Andy and Barbara Muschietti have finally spoken up about the delay. The good news? Season 2 is definitely happening, even if things are moving more slowly than fans hoped.

‘It: Welcome to Derry Season 2’: What’s the update?

Per Collider, here’s the main thing: Welcome to Derry Season 2 is alive and well. Barbara Muschietti confirmed it’s “going to be official,” though she admitted the process is dragging its feet. Ever since the first season wrapped three months ago, fans have been asking when the renewal would drop. The show’s success pretty much guaranteed a second season, but neither the Muschiettis nor the streaming platform had said a word until now.In a recent chat with the outlet, while promoting their latest project, ‘They Will Kill You’, the siblings finally opened up about what’s really taking so long. Barbara said, “Yeah, it is going to be official.” But then she got real about why it’s taking time: “We’re all working towards it. We’re working, the studio’s working. We want to make it real, and we need the material.” Andy Muschietti added that sometimes announcements just lag behind because of contracts and deal-making. He didn’t want to get too deep into the weeds, but he made it clear: everyone wants this to happen.Barbara doubled down: “A lot of times, the announcements are really just the studio showing confidence. We don’t need that because, honestly, we’re good. So when we greenlight something, it’s real. We’re not just tossing out an update to get people to watch. People already watched. It’s good.”The Muschietti siblings’ explanation makes sense. The show became one of HBO Max’s biggest debuts, and now, the audience wants more.

‘It: Welcome to Derry’: What is it all about?

The series, ‘It: Welcome to Derry’, dives into the haunted town of Derry, Maine, serving as a prequel to the 2017 and 2019 It movies. It peels back the layers of Pennywise’s origin and explores how fear and violence keep recycling through the generations. It’s not just about jump scares; there’s a look at how evil leaves its mark on a whole community. Bill Skarsgård is back as Pennywise, bringing that same unsettling vibe from the films.

‘It: Welcome to Derry Season 1’: What happened?

‘It: Welcome to Derry Season 1’ dropped in October 2025 and took us back to 1962. Everything starts when a young boy mysteriously vanishes, setting off a wave of terror in Derry. A group of local teens gets pulled into the mystery, and soon, outsiders (including some shady military types) start poking around, hinting there’s more going on than just one monster. Pennywise (that’s Bill Skarsgård again) makes his return, and things spiral fast. The show mixes old-school horror with a bit of historical drama, showing that Derry’s darkness doesn’t just belong to one era. By the end of the season, we got some answers about where Pennywise came from, but not all of them. There are still plenty of questions hanging in the air, setting the stage for what’s next. Season 2 can’t come soon enough.

‘It: Welcome to Derry Season 2’: What’s coming?

This time, the story jumps even further back, all the way to 1935. The creators have this cool idea of diving into a different era of Derry’s past with each season, always moving backward in 27-year steps, right in line with Pennywise’s creepy cycle.Season 2 aims to focus on the Bradley Gang Massacre, a bloody chapter from Stephen King’s book. Andy Muschietti teased Nemiroff, “The Bradley Gang is coming in hot.” So yeah, get ready for a whole new cast of folks dealing with Pennywise. Barbara Muschietti couldn’t help but add, “And a lot more fantastic characters. It’s a lot of fun… There are hats! [Laughs]” Seriously, she seemed excited about the hats. And that’s not all. Andy threw in, “There are kids smoking, kids with no teeth. There’s a lot of Depression era.” You can almost picture the gritty, rough-around-the-edges vibe they’re going for.But what else is in store for Welcome to Derry’s second season? Barbara has dreams that are, well, a little offbeat. “One of our favorite movies is Annie,” she admitted. “We’d love to do a musical episode. Right now, HBO is gonna torch us.” Meanwhile, Andy’s having fun with the idea of a “black and white” version, cracking, “Let’s take a poll. How many of you would like to see black and white?”
