Hollywood star Andy Serkis who will be helming ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’, has confirmed that the role of Aragorn, previously played by Viggo Mortensen, will be recast in the upcoming film.Amid much buzz and speculation that Mortensen, who played the iconic role in original three part film series, has been replaced by Leo Woodall, Serkis confirmed reports about his former co-star’s exit. However, contrary to reports, he did not confirm the casting update.

Speaking in an interview with ScreenRant, Serkis addressed ongoing speculation around the film’s cast and said, “I don’t know what’s out there at the moment, but I know there’s a lot of speculation, but let’s just say we are recasting the role and we are on the way to finding someone.”
Leo Woodall to replace Viggo Mortensen
Reports have suggested that Woodall has been cast, while others state that he is among the names being considered to join the cast that will feature Kate Winslet, Anya Taylor Joy, Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen.

Serkis noted that members of the original team behind director Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth saga are involved with this spin-off to ensure continuity with the story and other plot details. He added, “I think it’ll be a great marriage of a new story and an intimate story within the lore and world of Middle-earth that we all love. You’ve got to remember that for some people, this will be their first Middle-earth film. So that’s why it’s been such an interesting journey.”The film, set in the world of ‘The Lord of the Rings’, will take place between the events of ‘The Hobbit’ and the original trilogy, focusing on the pursuit of Gollum. Serkis, who famously portrayed the character, teased the film, saying, “It is a physical hunt for the character, but also a psychological hunt. So we’re just about on the launchpad now, and it’s very exciting. And yeah, it’s going to be a big ride.”

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ will reportedly bring to screens an untold chapter within the franchise. The film is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027. The film is expected to clash with the Marvel superhero film ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.
