75% of Singles Suffer from Ghosting – Learn How to Recognize the Signs Before It Happens

In today’s dating scene, ghosting has become a all-too-familiar occurrence. According to studies, almost 75% of singles have been ghosted at one point or another, leaving them baffled and wondering what went wrong. While ghosting can be infuriating and emotionally draining, there tend to be red flags before the ghosting even occurs. If you pay attention to these red flags, it can help you keep expectations in check and keep your emotional state intact

What Is Ghosting?
Ghosting is when someone suddenly drops all forms of communication with no reason. They refuse to respond to messages, don’t take your calls, and are gone from your life as if they were never there. It’s a hurtful experience that leaves the other party feeling rejected and disrespected.

Signs You’re About to Get Ghosted
If you observe these habits, the individual you’re in a relationship with may be planning to ghost you:

  1. Conversations Become One-Sided
If you’re the only one starting conversations or maintaining the conversation while the other person provides brief, evasive responses, it may be a sign they’re losing interest.
  2. Delayed or No Responses
When someone begins taking hours or days to respond—without a good reason—it may be a sign they’re gradually backing away. If they’re always leaving you on read, they might already be disengaging.
  3. Cancelling Plans Last Minute
Constant cancellations, unclear reasons, or no attempt to reschedule may mean that they’re no longer interested in the relationship.
  4. Reduced Engagement on Social Media
If they previously liked or commented on your posts but suddenly become inactive online, it may be a subtle signal that they’re backing away.
  5. They Don’t Want to Discuss the Future
Someone who is interested in a serious relationship will talk about future plans or dates. If they avoid those conversations or won’t commit, they may not envision the relationship lasting.
  6. You Notice a Sudden Shift in Energy
Trust your gut. If they used to be enthusiastic about speaking with you but now appear distant or uninterested, their emotions may have shifted.

Why Do People Ghost?
Ghosting is due to many reasons, and though it is never right, knowing why can provide some closure:

Fear of Confrontation – A few prefer vanishing over an awkward break-up talk.

Lack of Emotional Maturity – They might not be equipped with the appropriate words for expressing their emotions.

Keeping Options Open – In an era of dating apps, some people keep their options open all the time looking for “better” matches.

Avoiding Conflict – Instead of hurting your feelings directly, they choose to disappear, mistakenly believing it’s the kinder option.

How to Handle Being Ghosted
If you’ve been ghosted, here’s how to move forward:

Don’t Blame Yourself – Their actions reflect their emotional maturity, not your worth.

Avoid Seeking Closure – If they disappeared without explanation, they likely won’t provide one now.

Prioritize Self-Care – Spend time doing things that bring you joy and with supportive friends.

Establish Future Dating Boundaries – If you see red flags early, don’t be afraid to walk away.

Last Thoughts
Ghosting is a sad reality of dating today, but knowing the signs can keep you grounded in relationships. Instead of dwelling on ghosters, spend your time in relationships that are respectful, reciprocal, and fulfilling.
