Quote of the day by Martin Short: ‘Bad things happen, and yet the sun still comes up the next day... it’s up to you to carry on living your life’
Veteran actor Martin Short shares profound wisdom on navigating life’s inevitable hardships. He emphasizes that while tragedy strikes, the sun rises, urging us to carry on, maintain perspective, and learn from setbacks. Short’s own experiences with profound personal losses underscore his message that true character is forged not just by survival, but by the wisdom gained from adversity.

Loss often shapes a person in many different ways. It all depends on how we approach the difficult moments in life and how much we allow them to affect us. Martin Short, while reflecting on his own life experiences over the years, once spoke about how people need to understand that hardships are inevitable and a part of everyone’s journey.

Quote of the day by Martin Short

The quote for the day by the veteran actor reads, “Bad things happen, and yet the sun still comes up the next day, and it’s up to you to carry on living your life and keeping your setbacks in perspective. You also have to understand that on some level, these horrible and sad things happen to everyone; the mark of a man is not just how he survives it all but also what wisdom he’s gained from the experience.”The quote is taken from his memoir, ‘I Must Say: My Life as a Humble Comedy Legend’, which was published in 2014. Through the quote, the actor explained one of the reasons why he chose to write the book in the first place.

What does the quote mean?

The veteran actor points out one of life’s biggest truths — bad things will happen no matter what. It is inevitable, and the world does not stop when tragedy strikes, whether it is the loss of a loved one, a missed opportunity, or any other hardship. “Bad things happen, and yet the sun still comes up the next day,” he says, emphasizing that life continues to move forward regardless of personal pain. The next part of the quote talks about accountability and acceptance. It is up to individuals to accept that hardships are unavoidable, but perspective is what truly matters. “It’s up to you to carry on living your life and keeping your setbacks in perspective,” Short adds, explaining that while pain cannot simply be erased, people must learn to move forward with it.The third part of the quote reads, “You also have to understand that on some level, these horrible and sad things happen to everyone.” Here, Short emphasizes that suffering is universal and that difficult experiences should not stop people from continuing to work towards their goals or living their lives fully. The final part of the quote — “the mark of a man is not just how he survives it all but also what wisdom he’s gained from the experience” — suggests that hardships shape a person’s character. People are not remembered only for enduring pain, but also for the lessons and wisdom they gain from those experiences.Obstacles and setbacks often change a person deeply, and there is usually something valuable to learn from them. According to Short, the key is to respect those experiences and grow from them.

He said, “There isn’t a period of my life that I don’t like to think about or wouldn’t go back to. It sounds like a tragic family, but it really isn’t. She (his mother) was a remarkable person; both my parents were. So I never looked at it as if it was a tragedy — that I didn’t have them my whole life. You learn some sense of priorities. Our whole family took the attitude that if you have wonderful moments, don’t second-guess them, just enjoy them.”
