Tahawwur Rana to Be Kept in High-Security Cell at Arthur Road Jail

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin accused of having a role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, will soon be extradited to India. After his arrival in Mumbai, Rana is likely to be detained at the city’s Arthur Road Jail, in the most secure part of the prison—Barrack Number 12.

This specific barrack is significant from a historical perspective, since it was occupied by Ajmal Kasab in the past, the only survivor of the 26/11 attacks. At that time, the zone was highly secured, with bomb-proof facilities and close monitoring around the clock, due to the extremely sensitive nature of the prisoner.

Maximum Security for a High-Risk Inmate

Barrack Number 12 is meant to accommodate high-profile and high-risk inmates. Reinforced walls, state-of-the-art CCTV surveillance, and little external contact ensure the maximum degree of containment in the cell. Due to the possible security risk involved in Rana’s detention, the authorities are making such arrangements to maintain safety and segregation.

The fact that he was put in such a cell is an indication of the seriousness with which officials are handling his case. Although no official word has been issued, the history of the facility to deal with high-risk prisoners makes this a probable place for his detention.

Waiting for Final Orders

Although arrangements are in progress, the ultimate decision regarding where Rana will be housed in the jail will be taken upon his arrival. Authorities will have to review the situation on security grounds and logistical considerations before he is housed in the allocated high-security area.

What’s in Store for Tahawwur Rana

Rana is accused of conspiring in one of India’s worst terror attacks. In custody, he will be questioned by an inter-agency team that might consist of personnel from national intelligence and anti-terror squads. They will attempt to get additional information regarding the planning and back-up network involved in the attacks.

His extradition is a historic moment in India’s long search for justice for the 26/11 victims. Officials are tight-lipped about the precise details but will be expected to act swiftly and circumspectly once Rana is on Indian soil again.
