Regina Cassandra calls out Bollywood double standards, says 'Judged for my roots, not my talent'
Actress Regina Cassandra has voiced concerns over Bollywood’s double standards, revealing she faced prejudice due to her South Indian roots despite fluency in Hindi and prior film experience. She highlighted how regional identity and gender stereotypes impacted her treatment, calling for equal respect across all Indian film industries and demanding fair opportunities.

Regina Cassandra, the actress who acted in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi movies, packed off her candid experiences with prejudice and discrimination in Bollywood and how these affected her career in the industry. She said that, although her reading, writing, and speaking Hindi, as well as having performed Hindi films in her own voice, she was doubted for her accent because of being a South Indian. What troubled her more was being treated like a newcomer despite having significant experience in cinema. She highlighted the clear double standards in the industry, when Hindi actors are firm, it is seen as professionalism, but when South Indian actors show the same attitude, they are branded as arrogant.

A disrespect beyond words

In a chat with Hindustan Times, Regina Cassandra explained that the disrespect she faced was not limited to verbal remarks but was also reflected in people’s actions and overall approach towards her. She said it was obvious that she was being looked down upon in certain situations, which made her uncomfortable and hesitant to take up more projects in the Hindi film space for a period of time. At the same time, she noted that not everything was unpleasant for her and that every now and then good opportunities crossed her way. Her situation illustrates how regional identity, as well as what people think about women in our society and gender stereotypes, may affect a casting process and a criterion of behaving in the field.

South actress calls for equal respect across industries

Despite working in Mumbai, Regina Cassandra said her emotional connection and sense of belonging remain strongly rooted in South Indian cinema, where her journey began and where she earned recognition. She stressed that in a diverse country like India, language and regional background should never become a reason for bias. These traits should not be given more or less value in any other field. Her remarks now constitute being part of the subject of representation, inclusivity, language discrimination, and the obvious urge for an equal working situation in the Indian movie industry.

Regina Cassandra’s career and upcoming films

Regina Cassandra made her debut in the film ‘Kanda Naal Mudhal’ in the year 2005 and has been well recognized in the Tamil and Telugu film industries before she marked her debut on Bollywood with the movie ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’. She also did a special appearance in ‘Thalaivii’ followed by her Bollywood comeback in ‘Jaat’ and ‘Kesari Chapter 2’. She currently has ‘Mookuthi Amman 2’ in Tamil along with two more Hindi projects while balancing all industries at the same time while demanding dignity in treatment and fair chance.
