Regina Cassandra, the actress who acted in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi movies, packed off her candid experiences with prejudice and discrimination in Bollywood and how these affected her career in the industry. She said that, although her reading, writing, and speaking Hindi, as well as having performed Hindi films in her own voice, she was doubted for her accent because of being a South Indian. What troubled her more was being treated like a newcomer despite having significant experience in cinema. She highlighted the clear double standards in the industry, when Hindi actors are firm, it is seen as professionalism, but when South Indian actors show the same attitude, they are branded as arrogant.
A disrespect beyond words
In a chat with Hindustan Times, Regina Cassandra explained that the disrespect she faced was not limited to verbal remarks but was also reflected in people’s actions and overall approach towards her. She said it was obvious that she was being looked down upon in certain situations, which made her uncomfortable and hesitant to take up more projects in the Hindi film space for a period of time. At the same time, she noted that not everything was unpleasant for her and that every now and then good opportunities crossed her way. Regina Cassandra made her debut in the film ‘Kanda Naal Mudhal’ in the year 2005 and has been well recognized in the Tamil and Telugu film industries before she marked her debut on Bollywood with the movie ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’. She also did a special appearance in ‘Thalaivii’ followed by her Bollywood comeback in ‘Jaat’ and ‘Kesari Chapter 2’. She currently has ‘Mookuthi Amman 2’ in Tamil along with two more Hindi projects while balancing all industries at the same time while demanding dignity in treatment and fair chance.
